I haven't celebrated Halloween since I was a kid. However, I have carved a lot of pumpkins for kids. I usually used a fillet knife and a Buck 301 for the carving. That is about all that is needed. I also found that I can get yellow and orange glow sticks and use those instead of candles and they are safer. They look really good, even better, in fact. I put one orange and one yellow, more or less, depending on the size of the pumpkin. Great fun entertaining the kids doing that.

church sells 'em for fund raisers. let the boy get one and hack at it. typically i give him one of his grandfathers old not valuable and in poor shape fixed blades he inherited when my father in law passed on.

after halloween, i go and buy all the left over unsold ones for target practice, if they have any left.

Our community puts on a Halloween carnival for the kids. With a judged pumpkin carving contest, fishing booth, pie & cake auction and more.
It is great fun. We do several pumpkins. Saving and roasting the seeds alone will more than cover the cost of the pumpkin. Then we save the
meat for pies. The rest of what we use the pumpkin for is free. I'll do a few this weekend and make some pictures. I'll use my Buck model 334
Trapper to carve them. DM

My kids are at a really fun age and love carving pumpkins. My daughter is 6 and my son will be 4 in two weeks. My girl loves pulling all the junk out of 'em....til she has to reach too far, then it's dad's turn. I use glow sticks and the little battery operated tea lights. Good stuff :thumbsup::thumbsup:

here I have removed all the seeds, washed and now drying.
We will season these and roast them shortly.
Fun seasonal happenings on the farm.

Here is the seeds and meat removed. It's easy to removed fresh pumpkin meat. Slice using a cut going
around the inside. Then reach in, start pushing your fingers into the meat at the cut line and rotate the pumpkin. When done is this fashion the meat comes out in ribbons. The meat from one pumpkin will easily
make 3-4 pies.
Thanks,
DM

wonderful pics and descriptions Sir. really enjoyed this process. thanks for taking pics and writing the descriptions for us.

Nice job David. Thanks for posting the pics JB. The 334 is one I'd love to see back in Buck's lineup, perhaps with a steel upgrade. Something like D2 perhaps.

There are usually enough seeds gathered out of a pumpkin to pay for the price of the pumpkin. (4-5 dollars for a 1/2 lb.) When you compare the cost of roasted pumpkin seeds. Then the meat for fresh pies and the use of it for a decoration is all free. DM

Having any trouble with the blade wanting to close?
