Piggy backing off of the pepper thread, I wanted to comment on what Andy said about the 18 series. I agree with the bolsters being almost too rounded on both ends.

I picked up a 9 dot 53087 this week. I've been looking for one for a while with a pen instead of a spey blade. The 087 series has the same shape as the Case peanuts, I think a more pleasing shape.

Not really what I'd call a slim stockman, certainly a junior size. I like the way the sheepsfoot sits fairly low on this one. Pretty stag too.

Thank you Roland. If Schrade would have made an 855 with a pen and sheepsfoot, I would not be out carousing in the Case stables. So far, though, I've heard no bickering in the drawers.

A real purty 87 Hal.
Watch out though!!
Case knives are every bit as addicting as Schrades!! :D

Nice one Hal...hey...What is the size of that knife?, also do you have an idea on the approx. year?
I like the Stag very much-nice colour!!

edit... Charlie in his post.......
87
I take it thats the year?..forget the last q :o

Duncan, 87 is the Case pattern number: 3 1/4" Medium Stockman with rounded bolsters.
Case/XX/......... (9 dots) is from 1971.

Hi Roland,
Ok...cheers for that, and thank you.
I know I look silly on it :o - as I just do not know much about folders at all ( yet ) - time will help-...but I also find time very limited to read up on them right now...but I just love returning in here- getting helped out by you guys with my sometimes stupid questions, and checking out the stunning knives in here.
I could see it was a smaller one-but darned nice!!

Charlie - Thanks for the words of caution, point well taken. But i just HAD to have this one.

Duncan - Thanks for the questions. On this forum it is the best way to find out quick instead of guessing. It is a smaller knife. A bit larger than a peanut, and almost handles like the big guys. Too small for quite a few fellows, but just right for me. I really like this size of pocket knife.

Roland - I appreciate you filling in for me on the night shift buddy!

Gorgeous knife, Hal! That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a stockman. I didn't mention it in the pepper thread, but my other problem with the 18 pattern is that the sheepfoot blade sits waaay too high. I'm thinking about filing the kick down on one of mine to see if that helps. The way the sheepfoot sits on that 87 pattern looks pretty good to me- just about flush with the spine of the master blade. Nice! I prefer the pen blade to the spey as well.

The bolsters look nicely shaped on your knife too. The problem with the bolsters on the 18s (recent production anyway) is that they're so flat and round. If they had a bit more 3 dimensional shape to them, I probably wouldn't mind so much. Maybe I'll try shaping the bolsters on my "project knife" too.

Thanks for sharing that little beauty!

I too am a fan of the high sheepsfoot blade, although the low one is quite nice too.The high sheepsfoot is easy to open. You don't have to turn the knife around.

Great little Stockman - especially the stag.

. . . I personally perfer the Sheepfoot blade to sit high and mighty. :D

On smaller ones I don't mind, but I like them low on the larger ones. the top of the sheepfoot just digs into my fingers to much depending on the grip during use.

thats beautiful! i agree with knife crazied... like the sheep riding higher...
