Does the clip blade on the 6165 have a half grind like the 6265, is it a full grind, or is it a little of both depending on which one you get?

From pictures of actual knives, it seems that the Orange Harvest Pocket Worn 6165 has a full grind, though I can't tell if it is a full flat or a high hollow grind. All others I have seen have the saber grind (what you are calling half grind).

So it does seem to depend on which handle material you get. Which is weird, but not unheard of with Case. Examples: bone handled Sod Buster Jrs are full flat ground but the black synthetic is a really thin high hollow ground.

Also, the Pocket Worn Old Red version of the 6318 Med Stockman comes with the regular clip blade (like you find on the Small Texas Jack) but every other 6318 that I have encountered comes with the slim California clip.

You could call to verify before buying.

I know this it is true that the jimping on the skinner blade just depends on which handle material you buy, so I thought it might be true of the grind as well.

I see what you mean. The Brown Staminawood model has jimping on the spine of the skinner blade, while none of the others seem to (at least, according to online pics).

I don't own any of those larger hunting knives, myself. I don't hunt and don't really need a big knife like that. They are good looking knives, though.

Well, you set me to looking over my only Case Folding Hunter, a 6265CV, to examine blade grinds (I don't know if there is any carry-over between the single blade and two blade variations). My knife has the Sabre grind on both sides of the Clip blade and a flat grind on the secondary blade. Something I discovered when buying this knife: many of them do not come with the leather sheath, some do, like mine (which was a decision maker in which variation I bought). OH

Typically, the clip point blade of the 65-pattern Case Folding Hunter has a Sabre grind while the second blade typically has a flat grind.

Of course there are exceptions. There's a book out called Knives & Razors, 7TH Edition by Sargent. It would be a great help to you in answering many of your questions. As I've said before so would Collecting Case Knives, 1-ST and 2-ND Editions by Pfeiffer.

According to Pfeiffer in his 1-ST Edition, some early pre-1940 Case XX era 65 pattern knives were made with a flat ground main blade. He indicates that all 65 pattern knives made since then all have Sabre ground clip blades.

Ed - I have seen two dealer photos (of actual knives, not the Case catalog pics) of the Case 6165 in Harvest Orange Bone that clearly has a full grind on the single clip blade. It seems to be the only handle material with that blade - the others all clearly have a saber grind. No idea why it is that way, but it is.

Here's one of them:

It's hard to tell from this pic but the shoulder of the grind by the tang goes all the way up in a straight line. The saber grinds stop halfway. It was more clear on the other photo but it was from a non-BFC dealer so I didn't link it.

Compare to this one in the Rancher Amber Bone from the same site (GPKnives):

You've got something there John and I'm going to take back my statement about late year Sabre ground blades. I've done some checking and believe that there are in fact Flat ground blades being used on modern 65 Pattern knives.

I'll do some more digging over the next week or so and get back to you with more info. We've got doctors appointments over the next few days so it'll take a bit to get back to you.

Don't go to special effort on my part, Ed. Tedder's the one asking. Some good questions, too. I had never focused much on the '65 pattern before so I learned a couple of things about them in the course of doing the research to answer his questions.

Pictures of a Case I worked on for a guy at work. I have other folding hunters and the blades are the same style grind.
