Greetings, I have a great little Case 6308. It was made in 1980. The blades have worn down quite a bit. Does anyone know the type of steel used in these blades. Mine has aged darker so I know it is not Stainless steel. I am going to replace this fine knife if I can find a good one.

I have a few of the older 6308s, some in mint condition. My understanding is they are made of CV (chrome vanadium) steel. You can verify that with Case. They are pretty good about answering consumer questions like that.
If you are interested in one, I need to trim my collection!

Charlie send me a list with pricing. I could use another whittler. Larry

Here are three Case 6308s from about 1978 (2-dots). 2 are near mint, and one is a slightly worn, and lightly pitted from poor care; but still nice and snappy!
I'll post some older whittlers later.
hilltopper, email me please. It is not allowed to sell knives here!

In keeping with the original Case question, here are some more examples. 6308s, 6383s, and 6380s, the largest.
They date from the late 40's to the early 70's. All have split, wedged backsprings, and carbon steel (CV?)

Super display of old 63's! I love the last three from the bottom especially, they are just to purrrrdy for words..:)

So some guy named hilltopper won the auction for the 6308 on ebay! I wonder who that could be??;-)

Here's a Boker whittler in carbon steel that I bought new about a year ago.

I have a question related to this topic ... the 6308 and 6383 patterns seem identical (I've only seen them in pictures, never compared them in person).
As far as I can tell, same length, same blade configuration. Can anyone shed some light if there is any difference in the 2 patterns ?

6383 is a little bigger. 3 1/2" closed versus 3 1/4" for the 08. Also has a pronounced center swell on both sides of the handle, whereas the 08 is more of a humpback design with the swell only on the side towards the backspring. The bolster on the end with the main blade on the 08 is slightly tapered like you see on serpentine jacks, where the 83 is more rounded and slightly bulbous.

And, MAN, what is with the 14-year-old thread necro?

OK - thanks for the clarification ... I'll have to look at some pics of both to see the subtle differences. Yeah, I didn't notice, but epic thread resurrection for sure :-)
