Going through a bunch of knives and noticed this one has 4 pins shield side factory blemish or mistake that passed through the factory any insight would help or is this something that happens from time to time with a machine production line, curious with what everyone thinks, Only one pin visible on inside of liner, Thanks For Looking

Just an idea, but I almost wonder if the extra pin was added after the fact, perhaps to halt the spread of a crack in the bone scale. It's a technique sometimes used to stop cracks from spreading in sheet metal, to drill out a hole at the crack location (or at the propagating end, if it's a lengthy crack), and fill it with a rivet or screw/bolt. Bone-handled knives are often-known to have cracks near the pins, and drilling & filling it might've been a 'stop gap' attempt to keep it from getting worse. Especially if the extra pin doesn't penetrate the inside of the liner; I see no function for it otherwise. I'd be shocked if that was actually one that was missed at QA in the factory. The pin even looks a different color, as if a slightly different material was used.

Thank You Obsessed as that seems like a very good possability as I am new to knives and have had alot of luck with many forum member's with their knowledge and help. Knife was one of my cousin's and he was handy when it came to his knives so could of been something he did or had done. Thanks for the insight and help

Thank You, the knives my cousin left me are very nice indeed just way too many and I need to let go of some just do not like selling anything that might be a deffect without disclosing. Thank You for your help and look forward to seeing you on the forum's

That looks like Delrin to me.

Make sure it's not an extra piece of pin material that looks like a pin, but isn't just laying on the surface. I have one that I pried off. It was attached to the center pin, and happened when the rivet was spun. The pins are a bit different than rivets, and it looks like your "extra pin" is sunken, but when you said it did not go through to the liner I thought it worth mentioning. This is a CASE XX USA 087PE

Material is recessed will not move easily, someone on another site sugested it could have fallen in prior to the delrin process, let me just say I have no clue thought it was an oddity and just wanted to know if anyone else has run into this prior. I have a buck with just 1 pin or rivet on an early 110 same thing the factory tried for a short time and discontinued the practice. Thanks again for all help and thanks for looking

You just might have two more pins in that side than you think. I'd bet that the shield is pinned with two pins. Case was still pinning some of their shields in 1974 (6-dot).

Thanks for all info as it has helped but still leaves me guessing as new owner will have to determine as this is another I will be letting go as I am trying to get under 150 knives and it is very hard to choose which one's to let go. The case Knives are some of the nicer one's, but way to many for me to try and finish a collection so I chose to concentrate on the Kabar's and now moving onto the Buck Knives. Again Thanks for looking and giving me some insight on the possibilities.

As soon as I hit Post quick Reply I knew I made a mistake with that statement, Let me rephrase The Kabar's are somewhat easy as the Collector's Club only ran for 30 years I am about finished with all the club Knives, The Yearly CK Knives I have finished and they are on bladeforums as well as AAPK, I need another 3 knives to complete the club knives during the 30 year period. As far as the Buck Knives I plan on focusing on the 110 and 112, with the 124 and 119 thrown in for the heck of it. No true collector is ever done just adding and reducing as seen fit and or change of direction. The Case Knives are so extensive with the amount and also the length of time they were produced that I can not even begin to attempt. I love alot of the collection's that so many here on the forum's share may it be a handfull of Randall's or a complete collection of Shrade-Walden's, I was introduced to knives through my cousin and since his passing I have taken on trying to finish a couple of his collection's he started. I will pass this on also in my family as time goes by. Again Thank You One and All
