Case and a burning desire for a Zippo - Dooh!

So just a few weeks back I made the journey down to Titusville for the GEC Rendezvous. On the way I made a stop in Bradford to take the Case Factory tour. After the tour we stopped in at the Case / Zippo Museum. I picked up new mini copperlock knife which had been the plan.

I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the Zippo aspect and all the history they displayed. We were pressed for time to get to the Queen Factory tour so I did not think about buying a lighter as a souvenir. There was too much to choose from.

Well now I have a few Zippos on order as both gifts and a few keepers that will become part of my EDC. I carry a simple small disposable BIC lighter daily. I figured if I swap out my knives regularly why not swap out my lighter as well.

The kicker is I do not even smoke! I just figure it is a handy thing to have and my BIC does get used from time to time.

At least the lighters I purchased are significantly cheaper than my knives.

Mike, I too am a non smoker who have carried Zippos. Problem is often by the time I go to use it, the fuel has evaporated (I think that's what happened anyway - not a lighter expert). I do love them though.

It's a reason to be proud of living in PA. To have Case, GEC, Queen and also Zippo all here (and all within an hour or two of me) is pretty cool.

I've often thought we should change our nickname from "The Keystone State" to "The Pocket Weight State."

they say if you seal the lighter case with petroleum jelly, it prevents the rapid evaporation. just spread some on the insert when you are done filling it and place it back in. zippo manipulation has been a big part of my childhood and is very interesting

Zippo lighters, be they new or vintage can put a dent in your wallet, too.
(Did you see that semi-production solid gold case Zippo lighter while you were there?)
I have a couple now vintage Zippo's (I bought them new, maybe 20 - 25 years ago) that I keep around for camping trips. I managed to quit smoking 10 years ago. :)

The problem I have with that idea is that petroleum jelly is flammable. (Yes, it has to be heated, and there has to be a combustion source...but both are likely in this case)
I switched my two favorite Zippos over to butane inserts specifically because of the problem of evaporating fuel.

Mr Paul Hilborn sent me this Zippo, along with the vintage Boker, and the coin :) As I don't use the Zippo everyday, I fitted a gas insert, it burns just like a standard Zippo :) I fear that, without knife content, this thread won't last

although I never used the method myself to preserve fluid, I suppose the intention was to seal closer to the bottom of the insert. however ive often put too much fluid in the lighter any way and basically have lit my entire hand on fire before. very briefly of course :D:eek::oops:

Posted for knife content, it just so happens to have a Zippo accessory :D. By the way, using Vaseline to line the insert is an old school method to stave off evaporation. It is pretty common knowledge amongst pipe smokers at least and I have never heard of there being "incidents" involving unintended combustion.

My wife got me this Zippo a number of years ago as part of a Father's Day gift. Hasn't really left my pocket since. And neither has the Lambsfoot knife since I got it. :D

Right, and I've been known to keep the flame going long enough to get the case hot (some things just don't want to burn, lol)... though, in those instances, the petrolatum is most likely to not be moving toward the flame. Using petroleum jelly to reduce fuel evaporation isn't likely to result in fire; but, with my luck, I'd manage to do it.

This one came in all brass and was incredibly shiny when new, it has a nice patina on it now. That would be something else though if I had managed to wear off all the chrome...

Great pics Dylan, and that's a good tip about the Vaseline

very nice, and cool stogies? bit small but they remind me of the cheroots the man with no name smoked. im a minor collector in zippos as well and used to have a few of the cheaper ones. friends of mine used to receive them as gifts, since grown out of that hobby for the most part. there are a few lying around the room that i do fuel up for nostalgia sakes

I too sometimes carry a zippo but don't smoke. Recently inherited my dad's zippos, 1 I got him with his initials on it and two he was given by my godfather from white sands missile range New Mexico. One says just that, the other a smaller one, (ladies?) with a NASA logo. One tip I learned a long time ago that works well if you carry but hardly use and don't want evaporation, is to cut a piece of bicycle tire inner tube and slide it over the lighter.

Good one spyderg, I've heard that works too

A thread devoted to Zippo lighters belongs in Gadgets and Gear.
Moving there now...

I keep a Zippo Fluid Aluminum Fuel Canister in my car with my Zippo. It's enough for 1 fill and can be put on a key ring.

Just have to jump on the band wagon for anything Zippo, have collected a few
over the years.

I am not a smoker but have a few lighters. I actually just bought a copper Camel light just as a backdrop but haven't taken any pictures with it yet . The Zippo is solid copper. The Tommy lighter I think is from the 1920/30s. I bought online on a whim not knowing anything about it and think I ended up getting a steal. Here are some different knives with the Zippo and Tommy lighter:

They can become simple pleasures and treasures full of memories. Love the copper and silver theme photos. I am anxious for my purchases to arrive.
