Case antique carved bone?

A while back my wife gave me a 6318 with antique saw cut carved bone (believe that's what they call it).

It took me a while to appreciate the (to me) non-standard clip blade, but now I like.

The scale colors were typical Case 'amber' bone color.....very light with lots of bright orange. A quick tea soak solved that.

Now I just cant get past the carved bone. The pile side has saw cut bone that I love.

I probably should have told my wife I didn't care for the covers when she gave it to me........but it really meant a lot that she went out on her own to get me a knife, with out me specifically pointing one out.

Any thoughts on what I can do to the cover to help me want to carry it a little more? I have limited handy man skills and funds, so replacing the cover (in house or out) is probably off the table. I've been kicking around the idea of roughly grinding the carvings off and then polishing it up.

Thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Jim

Pics? I'm trying to envision the carvings.

This is a dilemma of course and I understand your feelings on it. Sometimes a near-perfect knife will end up being set aside over some seemingly minor annoyance or imperfection.

Are there rough or high spots on it that feel strange in hand? Or is it just the appearance? If it's got some strange contours perhaps some judicious rounding/lowering of those spots might make it more appealing yet not radically alter or mar the general character of the carving.

In the end it's your knife and as a gift of that nature it's something only you can resolve.

I'm not exactly sure how to do the pictures on here....but if you Google it, you,'ll see some examples.

For me it's a looks thing.

Ooof.

I share your pain.

I think you just put it in your pocket and carry/use it. You are in a sticky situation. If your dear wife finds out you are not carrying the knife she picked out your in hot water, if you modify it you didn't like what she picked out for you. If the scale were to get damaged somehow and sent off to get the scale replaced because it ment so much to you then everyone wins.

Alternative you could tell you wife that you love the knife but not the scales and want to get them replaced.

Good luck

The world of modifying production knives is very new to me. Is replacing scales expensive?

I'm really tempted to put a belt slander to it then polish it up.

If you're at all thinking of sanding it I would strongly suggest starting slowly by hand and then see what's what. A belt sander could do real damage in no time at all.

Yes, a belt sander would be like putting out a candle with a firehose.

Just drop it in your pocket with your keys and change and they'll do the work in time.

OUCH! Not trying to be a butthead, but if yours is like Pertinux's, that is one ugly knife. Wife or not, I'd be trying to find another cover for it.

Regardless of the covers it is a great pattern. I carry one (yellow delrin version) everyday. My vote is to carry it with a bunch of change and see if gains a little "character" after a few months in the pocket.

Nothing is often a good thing to do and nearly always a clever thing to say. I love my wife madly, so.....

If someone thinks enough of you (especially your wife) to give you something they know you'd love - then use it and show her you love the gift! OH
Ps that Case 18 is a great pattern.

I think I'm in the extreme minority, but I actually like it! If it were mine I'd have no problem carrying it, but I can see your situation is a bit different. You could carry it in a pocket with all of your other gear. (I carry some coins, a AAA lithium and a AAA copper Maratac torch in one pocket) I usually carry 2 knives, with the smaller (peanut or pen knife) going in the pocket with everything else.
The bone should start to go pocket worn, but I don't know how many years it would take.

At least your wife loves you enough to buy you a knife, and you love her enough to try to not hurt her feelings!

I always carry my knives with the rest of my pocket clutter. Do the same thing yourself.

After a few weeks, lightly sand the covers. In private. Every week or two, sand those scales a lick.

If your better half notices the difference, explain how pocket worn covers add personal character to a knife.

Down the line, when she watches you use the knife… Notice allowed how nicely the pocket wear is coming. "Don't you think that that looks great, Darling?"

Do not tell her how quickly pocket wear happens in the real world.
