Howdy folks, I've been reading your posts on the forum for a while as well as visiting some of the sale threads and you all seem to be a very knowledgeable group when it comes to Case knives. I was wondering if any of y'all knew of anyone who collected the black g10 run that Case did a couple of years ago. I'm not really interested in the Harley knives, or the Carhartt one's either for that matter, just the regular run straight from the factory. Is there anyone here that a person can go to find out exactly how many patterns were made? I currently have 6 of them...Trapper, Mini-Trapper, Trapper-lock, Russlock, BackPocket, and a medium stockman, and I am pretty certain they offered a Muskrat and a Seahorse whittler, but I can't find the knives or the information telling me how many more there are, or where I might be able to get them from. I've gotten all but one in the traditionals for sale area here, and for those I'm very thankful, but now I need to get the rest.

I'm trying to build a set of them for my son, and I want to make a custom case for them as well, so I want to be sure the case is big enough to hold them all, if I ever do find them.

Can you help out a brother in need, or direct me to someone you think could help me? I'd be in your debt, so thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Sincerely,

Scott Olson

I know they made a hawkbill. Good luck in the search.

I know they made a Seahorse Whittler and a Muskrat.

Hey, thanks for the replies so far guys, I'll have to look around more I guess. I'd really like to get a list of what was actually made, then find what I still need...hopefully one of you fine folks can point me towards that goal.

I have a Peanut in Black G10.

I'll bet the good folks at W.R. Case & Sons could answer your question if you give them a call. I believe they have a historian. Or maybe try a search for "Case Black G10" on the one of the auction sites.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely take contacting Case directly into consideration. I guess going right to the horses mouth would be the best route to keep me from looking like a horses other end while searching around like a nut.

Sincerely,

Some of the older Case catalogs are still accessible on-line. The 2012-2013 core catalog shows the black G-10 line. http://www.wrcase.com/Catalogs/2012/Core.pdf

It shows 8 patterns that were current at that time: Backpocket, Hawkbill Pruner, Medium Stockman ('18), Mini Trapper, Muskrat, Russlock, Trapper, and Trapperlock.

This is the link to their current offerings in that family. They appear to have removed a few (Backpocket, Hawkbill Pruner, Trapperlock) and added a Seahorse Whittler and Mid-Folding Hunter to the mix.

There were also at one point a Humpback Whittler, Moose, Peanut, and Slimline Trapper. I am not sure what year they were introduced but some I have seen on the big auction site go back at least as far as 2009.

Been digging further and can't find anything older than 2009, and nothing other than those 14 patterns that were offered in the "Smooth Black G-10" handle family. If you dig around some of the Case Master Dealer web sites, most of them can still be found with a couple of exceptions. I PM'ed you a link to one dealer who has some of the older patterns in stock.

Thanks again folks, your generosity and willingness to share your knowledge has been overwhelming.

This may be a dumb question, and I know you are trying to complete a specific collection, but I have a Case Sodbuster with black scales, which I guess are not G10. What is the advantage of G10 over these handles?

G-10 is a fiberglass-reinforced resin, similar to Micarta, though Micarta usually uses paper or linen. The black Case Sod Buster uses a solid synthetic (plastic) for the handles. It may be DuPont Delrin but I am not sure of that. It doesn't quite have the same feel as the yellow Delrin.
