I want to try a Case Mini Blackhorn as a small work/utility knife, but I don't want to spend money that I shouldn't on something I will regret. Does anyone own one? How do they compare to typical Case quality? I have carried a Peanut in chestnut bone with CV for over a year, so I have high hopes.

If you're talking about the 059L pattern, I've got one with a 2008 tang stamp. I saw your post so I pulled it out of its box and I'm checking it out right now. I've never used it so I can't comment on that but it seems like a decent knife. Good lockup but I can force a little side to side blade play if I try. Nothing I would consider a problem. Good snap on closing and a firm click when it locks open.

The blade on mine has the As Ground finish and the edge is razor sharp. There must have been a skilled honer at the sharpening wheel when this one was made. Blade is not centered but that doesn't seem to be a problem either. Handle on mine is Black Synthetic. One thing that I find unique about the knife is that the blade has a long pull. Well, it's actually kind of short really but it's a straight pull and not a curved nail nick. You won't need it though as the blade can be easily pinched open.

The knife doesn't "wow" me or anything like that but mine seems like a good knife for the price. I can't find anything on the knife that I would consider a defect.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

I think they're quite nice. Small, narrow lockback, worry-free construction. Excellent ergonomics, IMO. A very good edc for knife nuts and non knife nuts. They aren't very expensive. At all. I think it may be the least expensive actual knife Case offers. Case does some occasional runs of these in different colors and as "logo" knives, though I think they tend to be lackluster, not worth the slight premium. I'd kill for a run done in CV. As much as I like traditionals, I cannot deny the value and practicality of an injection molded handle Case. Probably gets more pocket time than any other Case I have.

I do have a similar all-stainless handled gentleman version. Same blade, but the stainless slab handles are shaped differently. A bit thinner in the pocket. However, this knife really doesn't click for me.

Amen. The plastic handle is MUCH more ergonomic than the stainless slabs. For an introductory knife designed to be inexpensive and small it does the job.

Great little knife for the money you can easily find a good used one for less than $10. I've had one on my workbench for a few years and it was used when I got it. I use it for scoring everything I ever need to score or just a quick grab to cut something. Keeps an edge relatively well I just run it across a bench stone when needed and the edge comes right back but has a tendency to roll but you can strop it or just slice off a few slivers of wood with it and that will get your edge hair popping. Hope that helps..

Here's a picture of one with my TC Barlow. It was a gift, way back when I joined the Case Collectors' Club. I find it a little small for my arthritic old fingers, so haven't used it.
