Case Bone Handle Durability

Hello Knife Nuts,

I'm narrowing in on the knife I want but I wanted to ask about bone handles, the smooth one's in particular, ability to handle other metal objects in the pocket. The pocket my knife lives in shares space with my keys, SAK Classic, and some foldable reading glasses (God send by the way!).

So durability is probably not the best word but I was just wondering if scratching or chipping is something I should consider? As I've said, I'm a function over form type guy but I'm surely not against a good looking knife either. But, if it's going to scratched up pretty good, then I don't mind going synthetic either.

I don't see slips for these gems.

Thanks in advance.

The only problems I've had came from dropping a Case Peanut from a 20' ladder. Other than that, it just gets worn down and smooth. The worn look looks good.

The smooth bone knives I have, while not a Case, seem to survive my right front pocket and the change, and other knives (up to three) in there without chipping or noticable (to me) scratching.

The bone is more durable than you think, except for being dropped. You mentioned that there is not a slip for this knife, but there are generic slips in all sizes if you want to go that route.

Hi Ernie,

I've been looking around for slips and haven't really found much out there. I have no issue with generic. Perhaps my Google-fu is weak, :)

Try one of these https://www.collectorknives.net/shop/accessories/ck-european-goat-skin-knife-pocket-slip/ from Mike. They are very slim, adding zero bulk to your pocket. I have a small that more than accommodates my peanut (normally I only use a slip for it in shorts to add a little friction so it remains in my pocket). I have the large that is more than enough for my Churchill.

Whilst the dye job on many CASE knives may be questionable, the quality and thickness of the bone slabs always seems very good. I've had more cracked centre pins on GEC knives than CASE, in fact, the only CASE knives to display pin crack were delrin ones...

Should be OK then :) But I'm not too qualified here as I NEVER carry anything else in my pocket other than my knife. Keys, coins etc belong elsewhere:rolleyes: I don't like full heavy pockets and trying to sort out stuff from my knife, therefore not much need here for they 'knife purses' either:D Plenty of good ones available, the French make very nice soft nappa or goatskin knife slips, not bulky.

I agree with Will Power Will Power in that I don't carry anything else in the same pocket normally (except on occasion my wallet). The slips for me are more for shorts carry to add friction. I have modified several of my pairs of jeans to have a nice "slot" sewn into the RFP (props to @5K Qs for the idea) which I use sans slip. My main issue is I don't like horizontal lays.

On my journey back into these knives, I've been carrying my Buck 389 canoe for a week now. For knives in this size range I don't mind it dropping sideways. I can toss a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 into my pocket and not really care but the Chaparral starts getting to be a bit much.

My pocket carry is pretty set. I don't like things jingling off my belt or loops and I rarely wear pants with side pockets. I am pretty minimal in what I do carry though.

I can’t stand pocket slips and I carry to much in my pockets for my knife to get its own pocket so.....I just drop my knife in my pocket and go. It’s never been a problem.

Bone covers will last as long as the knife, just look at vintage knives. The stuff in your pocket will smooth and polish the surface giving a "natural" version of the coveted "pocket-worn" finish.

Like this over 60 year old Case with saw cut bone. Yeah, bone holds up just fine & nothing (well, almost) feels better than a well worn old knife.
