Case/Bose lockback whittler spring tension

Has anyone here sent theirs back to case to increase the tension on the secondary blades? I just did and while they did increase the tension on the main blade by a lot (which I didn't ask for), one of the secondary blades still has little snap, and when you put a finger behind the blade to guide/support it it starts to close. How common was this problem on this knife and did Case do anything to help you? It seems like all they really did to the secondary blades was make them duller than when I sent it in, haha (which I will fix no problem). This has the potential to be my favorite knife of all time and Id love to get this problem fixed once and for all but I am just not sure the Case factory is up to the job. When I sent them my Norfolk due to blade play they reduced, but didn't solve the issue, and it came back with dull blades and a bigger space in the backspring than when I first sent it in.

The secondary blades on mine are pretty week. I thought I read where other folks were sending them back for repair.

I'd stay on them till you are satisfied with the repairs. Give them a call or email and escalate the issue till it is resolved.

Hi. When I bought mine, had same issues. I sent it back once and it came back nicely sharped and polished. I sent it back twice and it was fixed to so, so satisfaction. Then I sold it. My advice is to send it back again.

It alarms me to hear of this. My Norfolk has never pleased me due to some issues, I'm really brooding about the outcome if I send it back. I suppose CASE can only attempt to fix these knives rather than replace them as they are out of production?

I can say I sent in an ebony Tribal Spear which came back in fantastic condition and I was completely pleased. This does make me rethink purchasing a Lockback Whittler in the future though.

Oh, who am I kidding, I still want one. :D

Well, I guess I am just an overexpecter. On a knife as expensive as the collabs, Case should not be shipping knives that are going to come back for rework. The people making these knives are experts (at least compared to me) and they can tell when a knife isn't right. Especially on a whittler pattern where you are making difficult cuts and pushing the blades and points in a lot of different directions. To me, these reports are unsettling. - Ed

Kerry,

Is it possible they cannot resolve this issue without replacing the springs and/or blades and as such are somewhat unwilling/unable to rectify the issue. I had this issue and it was unresovled after a return to Case. It ended up with a collector who did not care. I handled another at a knife show recently that was NIB and the secondaries were so loose you would be afraid to use them. That knife also had made two visits to Case according to the owner.

I think they would have to replace the springs. I don't remember what the issue was that caused this problem but I think that they were replacing the knife rather than repairing them. Whatever the issue was, as far as I have heard, Case was solving the problems to the customers satisfaction. They are good folks at Case and they wouldn't want people to be unsatisfied with their products.

I wanted to mention how incredibly difficult the LBW is to make. Looking back, I'm really surprised they made them but the folks at Case wanted T.Bose to challenge them. I think this knife pretty much did that and, overall, they did a very nice job. I'm impressed with the one that I have.

They repaired my Ak hunter in record time to my total satisfaction at no cost and sent it back with priority shipping. Case repair service is top drawer in my book.

IMHO the tension on the blades is a matter of taste not science. Since these knives have been out there for six years and are no longer available from authorized dealers, anyone who is disatisfied now either bought it second hand or was satisfied when they bought it 6 years ago. IIRC when they came out the weak tension was a problem and it was fixed to the satisfaction of those who complained at the time. In addition, for a six year old custom run, Case may not have replacements available or the parts. For example, spyderco doesn't carry parts for a knife unless it is is currently made in their US plant.

On this forum, when Case could not satisfactorily fix a Norfolk and could not replace it due to no more knives being left (less than a year after it came out), they offered the person a replacement knife from the current Bose collaboration.

Really paying $250/knife may be high compared to their base product line, but it is not high enough to expect perfection. If you expect perfection or you'll be heartsick, don't buy them. I have 4 and none is perfect (they are made by men not machines), but I like each one and use them regularly.

Very well put. I could not have said it better myself.:)
