I have a group member in my physics lab who found out that I like (make that love) knives. He said he didn't know/care much for the newer kinds of makers out there, but he did collect case knives.

He claims to have a case bulldog that was made in the 60's and is supposed to be in mint condition. He also claims that he once found it had a price tag of $800.00 usd at one point.

Now I checked the bay and it seems that these are still in production, but the highest price I found was a "buy it now" for $275.00.

So is he fibbing about the high price, or is his bulldog from the 60's really that valuable?

I figured you guys would know best, thanks in advance, J.

It has been a few years, but last time I check 3 to 400 was the going rate and I have seen examples mint in boxes go for 2 to 300 usd.

In general Case knives from the 60's do bring substantially more than the current production Case knives or even those produced in the 70's and 80's but not that much.

As far as is it worth 800, I personally think that is too high, I have not seen any production Case from the 60's sell for that much nor have I seen any dealer ask that much for a CASE USA (no dots) knife of any pattern (does not mean it has not happened), but it could be worth that much if someone was to buy it for that. ;).

Last time I was at Tony's table at Blade 2008, he had one for a little less than 300.
I just have not seen a 60's era regular Case 5172 (single knife) or any pattern actually produced in the 60's sell for 800.

There are three versions of the Bulldog...XX era, XX/USA (transition), and the USA. The blade markings are different on each one, there's an illustration of all three in Sargents guide. Book prices for mint with the box are as follows:

XX 650.00

XX (no blade etch) 800.00

Transition 500.00

USA 400.00

They will usually sell for around 75% of the book value.

If you could find a XX 1940's MINT 5172 No Etch. Not cleaned to mint. Which is a mis-statement of magnitude.. I think You would have to pay more than $ 800.00..

I agree, but 800 for one made in the 60's would be way too high.

I agree also. But there are to 1964 XX Patterns worth more than $ 800.00. To mention 4 knives that come to mind, would be Mint Late Rogers Bone Muskrat, Rough Black Muskrat, 5488 Congress,6254 First Model Trapper..

Wow, I guess he wasn't BSing me . I'll have to ask him about it next time I see him to be certain of the marking on it. He sounded pretty confident in it's price value when we last talked.

He didn't seem to be the "knife knowledgeable" type, but ya never know. Thanks for all of the input guys, keep it coming, J.
