Case, Bulldog, or A.G. Russell?

I've been told that the Case Seahorse Whittler is a good buy. I'm not sure I trust Case, though. I like the looks of the Bulldog Viking Whittler a bit better, but I'm not sure of Bulldog's QC either. Then again there's the A.G. Russell Rope knife. Which one should I get? The Viking vs. Seahorse thing HAS been asked before, but the thread was summarily hijacked for other purposes. Which one would work best for me? Which would you buy? Keeping in mind that:

Seahorse: about $70
Viking: about $60
Russell: $40

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I'd go for the Bulldog. Great quality and bang for the buck. Is the Though I have heard the A.G. Russell rope knife is great for $40.
If I was going to but it as an EDC I would probably go for the rope knife

That Rope Knife looks pretty good for the price. I wish one of the two small blades as a coping blade though. May have to pick me up one of those.

I payed around $48 (apiece) for both of my seahorse whittlers!!! (New Graham knives, Bayou lafourche knife works, both have them at good prices!!!)

SpyderJon,

I have both the Seahorse and the Viking whittler. The Case Seahorse has a much better fit & finish and the edge grind was better on the seahorse as well. The Viking Whittler is a good knife and I do like the carbon blades better than the case truesharp steel. You can get the seahorse for <$50 online. The seahorse is the best case I have seen in a long time. Either knife will be a good user and to be a 4" knife it carries easily in the pocket. I've got good use out of both knives...

If I may ask, where are you getting the Seahorse for less than $50? I haven't found that thing for less than $55, and I've looked most places I can find! Thanks!

I've handled a couple of Seahorse Whittlers. They appear to be nice production slipjoints, but A.G.'s Cattaraugus Rope Knife is in a completely different league; even the "Seconds" version of the Rope Knife. The Cattaraugus is just about as close and you can get to handmade quality.

I agree BB. As much as I enjoy the offerings from Case and Bulldog, AGR multiblades are as you say "in another" league. They are much more consistant (and higher) in fit and finish as well as the crisper blade actions.

With that being said, I think Case took some great strides with the Seahorses. The ones I own and have seen have shown me that Case is trying to turn things around and if that pattern serves as an example they are doing it.

Ditto. I've never been disappointed with an AG Russell knife. Besides, look at the warranty! Don't like it, send it back, it breaks send it back. Bulldogs are O.K., IMHO but, I'm definitely not a Case fan.

I'm almost positive that the blade steel on the A.G. Russell is far superior to the cheapo "Surgical Stainless" on the Case, so that would be my pick.

I have two of the A.G. Russell rope knives. One is numbered and the one I carry is a second. Can't for the life of me find what made it deserve the notch in the blade. Great knives.

Well, I ordered the seconds Rope knife. I'll probably still get a Seahorse or a Viking, but I think the Rope knife will do just fine for now. Thanks to everyone for all the help! I'll be sure to let you know how things turn out when I get it!

Sincerely,
Anthony

Agree with Danbo..."Cheapo" is exactly how I would describe Case blade steel...really do like AGR's stuff!

Well, I got the knife today. I was impressed with the materials, as well as the heft of the knife. I know why MINE was a second, in that it has a lazy pen blade with some horizontal movement when its open. Is this enough to send it back? Probably not. I'm more inclined to say that 2 out of 3 solid blades is enough, but I dunno. What say y'all? Nice knife, though. Only needs to be sharpened a bit and have the grinds evened out a bit. Not too shabby.

Was in Lowe's today, by the by, and got to see the Seahorse up close and personal. Not a bad little design if you can get one that's tight in all three blades. It was a blue bone model, though, and I have to say that the blue made the knife look completely wrong. It was the ugliest thing I've ever seen! Truly, not a groovy thing. Just plain ugly. Jade green bone, though, could be nice. Thanks for all the input! Now, if only the Morrow would come my way...

Sincerely,
Anthony
