I'm very impressed with my Case Swayback Jack(Chestnut Bone and CV blade) that it got me wondering if all the Case Chestnut CVs are as good? Anyobe have personal experience with the others in Chestnut/CV? Thanks!

Case Stockman in CV
Average $44 knife, nowhere near as good as the Swayback.

They must have decided to pay attention to the quality of the swayback
There again the Swayback should be very good indeed as it is $67 ?????!!!!

(The F&F on the Queen Amberbone #9 4" or the #26 3 1/4" Stockmans, blows the Chestnut Stockman out of the water)

These pics were when she was new, She looks much better now in patina:D

I have a Swayback and the pen bladed Medium Stockman in Chestnut Bone. Both have a wonderful colour and feel.

Many have commented on the excellent F&F of the Swayback, I strongly agree with them (flush in 3 positions,no gaps at all,no blade play etc) I'm wondering if this is because it is a new pattern and is being made with new machines and dies? Could be, but it really is outstanding in finish. I got mine for under 60 USD, e-mail me if you want the dealer's name, he's excellent.

I've got the stockman, two muskrats, and 3 toothpicks (including one with a gun-blued blade which was an exclusive from Shepherd Hills Cutlery).

The fit & finish on all are super, and they were all extremely sharp right out of their boxes.

It seems to me that Case does a particularly good job in fitting and finishing their CV knives,
sbecause I've had similar good experiences with the Amber Bone Series and Dark Red Bone Series.

So do the other chestnut cv cases have f&f equal to the swaybacks ie flush in all three positions, zero gaps and no blade play? If the other chestnut models have flaws what are they in your experience? Thanks!

Maybe it has something to do with the "TB" on the front of the pattern ;)

You make a good point about the machining. A lot of the established Case patterns are most likely made on old setups. The swayback pattern was given to Case as a hard pattern that worked perfectly, flush in all positions. If they start with a perfect prototype then it stands to reason the end items should be very close and easy to clean up.

In my experience, no, but they are equal in quality to the rest of their line.

What is the length of the pictured Swayback and what is the length of each blade?

Very nice looking knife.

Closed 3&three 8s/8.25 cm
Wharncliffe main blade 2.25" / 5.8cm
Pen blade 1.75" 4.7 cm

I can tell you this because I've just taken the Wharncliffe out of an orange, a half hour in there has given in a funky tiger stripe, damn near Damascus patina:D:thumbup:

Thanks guys. I hope the Swayback is a sign of things to come for Case. Maybe in the future more if their knives will be as good. I'm going to steer clear of the other Chesnut CVs because the Swayback has kind of spoiled me in terms of f&f.

The Chestnut CV Swayback I have is just about perfect too. The SB is my favorite pattern and Case has spoiled me with three near perfect examples of the cutlers art.

They are great but my main blade keeps getting a little wobble until I oil it. Can this be fixed by squeezing the bolsters together?

I have a Peanut and the Trapperlock in Chestnut/CV. Both are flawless and bring great joy. I'd carry the peanut except I'm enjoying my yellow delrin/CV peanut too much!

The Chestnut Bone peanut turns heads. Highly recommended.:thumbup::thumbup:

Nice shot of the Peanut, thawk. It could count as a "gentleman's knife."
