Maybe it's my imagination. But it seems that this new Case Sodbuster holds an edge better than the Old Timers that I've had.

I have only heard one person compare the two (Case CV And OT 1095) on the "other" forum, and he said that they were about equal with maybe a slight edge (pun intended) to the OT.

What vintage is your sodbuster? Is it a newer CV one with yellow handles?

It's a new Yellow one. The edge (it came sharp) seems to be holding quite well. I don't care for the shiny polish of the blade though.

alloy wise, the Chrome Vanadium Case should hold a little better edge. I believe the Old Timer is simply 1095, while the CV is supposed to be something like 50100B, which has a few other goodies alloyed in, like Vanadium and a little chrome. Both of these help with wear resistance.

In my experience, Schrade/Old Timer's heat treatment of their 1095 blades seems to be a bit more consistent than Case with their CV.

All of my Old Timers (most of the model 8OT, the larger Stockman) are essentially the same, and I'm very pleased with their performance. With my Case knives, I have a large stockman that is great, even better than my Old Timers in terms of edge retention, but I also have a Case one-blade Doctor's knife that gets dull after opening a couple of envelopes.

I have the chrome-vanadium Case knives and I like them. I also have the Schrade carbon steel knives and like them too. I need more knives tho. Always needing more knives for some reason.
