On Christmas Eve, I stopped at a local junk mall. I had been in a blue funk for a couple days, wishing my life was different, worrying on things I couldn't change and not paying enough attention to things I could. I was getting a few last minute items for Christmas and decided to take a look around for any old knives. I found a Case XX moose, 6254 1/2 I believe, in red bone, in great shape. Usual patina and worn bone scales, other than that, great shape. I came across a Remington barlow from the old factory, in perfect shape other than the scales falling off, for a pittance! The lady behind the counter asked if I liked knives, and had a collection to sell, a Case collection. I told her I had a custom slipjoint on order, and wouldn't be able to buy any collections, but that she could post them on my Facebook group Slipjoint Addict. She proceeded to describe them as display pieces, some were new, some were old. She preferred to collect Case knives that had a Halloween theme, mainly new ones.
It reminded me of speaking with my fathers next door neigbor in the commercial park. This guy is a hunter, not just going out a few times during the season, or doing a little target practice, but a hunter. Out there in nature. He has some nice toys that I could only dream about. He also has a huge Case knife collection, going back to the early Case brothers pieces. I loaned him my Case knives collectors guide, and he was in his glory looking at it. I showed him a few of my EDC knives, he really liked them, especially the Bose collaborations. He was surprised when I told him how much $ they cost. His collection is just for looking, his favorite fixed blade to use is his Case Finn hunter, he asked me if they made any in CV these days, he could only find SS, he wanted to get one for his son. He was sharing his passion for cutlery with his son, both collecting and using.
We are knife nuts, we look at ourselves as the motley crew, the few, the proud. I think we would be surprised at how many of us are really out there.
Don't give up, we are many. We might be right under your nose.
