Case comes dull?
Hi as some of you may know because of a more recent thread I purchased a blue bone case peanut new in the box off ebay. Well it came today, but to my surpise it didn't come sharp enough to shave the hair off my arm. Is this normal?
anything is useful as I'm new to the slipjoint game

P.S. I love the knife just do they usually come this dull??

Of the Cases I've gotten in the past year, most have been sharp. Some have been VERY sharp, and a few have needed a minimal time on the stones to get up to par. The one I EDC has only been stropped on bare leather a time or two and is still quite sharp.

Most of the newer Case knives that I've bought lately have great edge profiles, but they also have relatively large burrs along the edge. Just removing the burr usually creates a very good edge.

I almost had a heart attack a few days ago when I bought a new Case CV Mini-Copperlock and found it actually had a great edge with no burr. It was the only time that has happened to me in twenty years. Every other Case I have bought had a terrible rough burr along the edge. The good news is, once you knock the burr off, you have a pretty good edge. Beats having to reprofile out of the box.

Not being able to shave hair is hardly an indication of it being "dull." Sure, it'd be great if all new knives could do that. But yours may just be a few strokes on your sharpening device of choice away from a scary sharp edge.

Where you really want to start complaining is when your new knife is MANY MANY strokes away from being sharp -- in other words when the edge needs complete re-profiling. Search the archives here for the numerous complaints about the factory "edge" that Queen puts on their D2 pocketknives and you'll get a better idea what I mean.

FWIW, I recently got a brand new Case stockman, the first new Case knife I've purchased in more than 20 years. I was blown away at how good the fit and finish is on the knife. I actually sent Case an e-mail and complimented them on the knife. The edges are quite good too. Perfect? No, I'd probably take it to my Sharpmaker if I intended to carry/use the knife. But I wouldn't expect to have to spend too much time stroking it 'till all three blades would be just where I like 'em.

I can remember when most all new pocket knives were dull right out of the box and this was not too many years ago.

If I recall, at one time it was standard practice to ship a knife unsharpened and the user expected, and was expected, to put the edge on it the user wanted. It gave the user a choice instead of making a choice for him. Then again, in those days the user and the end use was a part of the full process. Hey, I may be off on this. If so, straighten me out.

All of my Case knives came with an excellent toothy edge like micro serrations. All of my Queens needed work when they arrived.
