Case Congress Question

Greetings,

I picked one the the medium Case Crandall Congress knives like this. The fit and finish is excellent. I am very happy with everything except the knife has 4 backsprings...one for each blade which makes it on the thick side. I assumed it would have only 2 springs.

Do most factory Congress knives with 4 blades have 4 back springs? What I'm looking for is a decent Congress with 4 blades and 2 springs. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

Traditionally, congress knives always had two backsprings for a 4-blade knife. Case made all of theirs that way until some time in the mid 90's when they went to the 4-spring design. The 4-spring design makes the knife more bulky at the same time that the blade stock thickness is reduced. Compare a new 64052 with an old one - the old one will have thicker blade/backspring stock while at the same time being slimmer overall.

Queen makes theirs in the traditional way with two backsprings.

Thanks for the replies. I looked for some older Case congress knives on the auction site and they get a little pricey.

One thing I forgot to mention on the Case was the nail nicks did not extend out far enough on the larger blades to be effective.

I've never owned a Boker and have a little Queen Stockman that I'm impressed with? How would a similarly priced Boker and Queen match up?

Thanks,
Dave

I have not looked at any new Boker knives recently - but their 5464 pattern in carbon steel and bone handles would be a nice user.

I have a Queen large congress in honey amber and D2 that I use - its a great knife, kind of a pocketful though since its full size.

I have a Queen 2-blade 4" Congress in Cocobolo.

Single spring, and it is pleasently slim for the pocket.
Use it for whittling.

I could see a double spring being a pocketful...

Does anyone know how the Henkles stacks up compared to Boker and Queen? Do they have 2 backsprings for their 4 bladed congress patterns?
Thanks,
Dave
