I'm debating between the mini copperhead in the Crimson Barnboard and the Root Beer. Does anyone have any knives with either of these style scales and could post pictures? Thanks.

I have never owned either, but I have seen enough photos of the actual knives on the Internet to have a pretty good idea. Though it would depend on your personal taste, I suppose. But I have never seen any of the Root Beer Jigged Bone knives that especially appealed to me. Sort of the color of weak tea with a lot of skim milk added, with a swath of darker brown in the middle with an odd and irregular jigging pattern.

The Crimson Barnboard has a fairly rich deep red with a good black dye on the jigging, and I find I really like Case's barnboard jigging - it makes for a nice textured grippy surface. For me there's no contest between those - Crimson Barnboard.

Though if you dislike deep red and like gray milk (maybe it's more like a root beer float with a lot of ice cream?) then you might like the Root Beer bone.

mrs.z I have the this one and Root Beer Rules! What I particularly appreciate is that the scale slabs are thick, this is actually very important on a small knife as it gives better grip & handling. Thin skimpy slabs are a bad idea as they give a small knife a toy-like aspect. Root Beer also has a nice pocket worn finish to the bone. Don't know about the other bone you mention though.

jc57 - thanks for the comments. I suppose I think of the root beer bone as similar to the amber bone mini cooperlock that I have. I like the latter a lot, although it's probably a good bit different. I think the newer amber bone looks a bit different than the one I have, as well. I can see why the root beer might seem boring, though.
I've seen pictures on vendor sites and such, but in my experience, those tend to vary quite a bit compared to an individual knife.
I also have a barnboard mini copperlock - but it is blue. I somehow ended up with blue dye on my hand when I was using it before. After that, I tried to use some sort of water/baking soda mixture to get some of the excess dye out, and I haven't had any more problems with it, but still felt like more could come off. I'm not sure if that's normal with those particular scales, or what. Not a huge turn off, just something I discovered.

Will Power - thanks for the pictures and comments!

I'll throw a vote in for the root beer. I have two examples, a Peanut and and 032 pattern Stockman, that are fine specimens. Very old world feeling. I'll post pics of one or both later if I remember. I have several "crimson" dyed Cases also, but none with the barnboard jigging. Wish I did because I am fond of the texture and grip of that jigging as noted by an earlier poster.

Have a couple "ginger ale" bones also if you are interested in seeing the contrast with those. Might be the best of both worlds for you because there is a bit of a barnboard jigging going on with those, just not quite as aggressive I would say. A little more wavy and spaced. I believe its their version of "winterbottom" jigging. Not sure they ever made a mini copperhead in that bone though.

Come to think of it, maybe I just have a thing for soda-themed bone? I know I have also owned at least one GEC-made knife with "cola-jigged" bone.

And for the record I will note that I have two of each the root beer and ginger ale because I specifically recall thinking after getting one exemplar of each that they came with exceptionally good F&F from Case. They were having, in my estimation as someone who buys a fair number of their knives, a good year. Thus, I intentionally went back to the well for a second pattern in each material, out of fear the availability might dry up. I don't recall having any issue with any crimson bone knives I have acquired, but I also don't recall having that "I better get at least one more of these before it is too late" feelings about them either.

Very nice coloring on that Mini Copperhead. Both knives actually.

How do like the position of the Pen blade when opened? The way it doesn't follow the lines of the backspring is what has kept me from getting a Mini Copperhead or a Sowbelly. Maybe it's better in use than it seems. Just curious what your thoughts are.

The pen blade on the mini copperhead is a bit odd. I think it will be fine for everyday things, but I may change my mind once I put it to some good use. Will have to update on that.
