Case cv bone or yellow?

I am going to order a case knife soon in cv. This will be a 18 pattern stockman probably as a gift for my leatherman micra carrying brother. I want him to have a somewhat smallish yet "real" knife. Or would he rather have peanut?

So... Is the fit and finish better or worse on the bone vs. the yellow handle option?

I believe that on the yellow handle they just make the liners thicker than needed and then just grind everything flat. I think they would have to work a little harder with the bone.

I know that the quality fluctuates contantly. What could I expect age wise from a knife from a net vendor like www.knifecenter.com?

Would the difference be worth the price for a user?

I don't think the overall finish on Case is going to vary depending on handle material. Its all going to be a nice knife, no matter what you get.

So the only quetion is bone or yellow syn.

Stockman or peanut.

it all depends on the person. Does this person like synthetic materials or is he sort of old school, like the person who would preffer a blued steel and walnut gun over a stainless and plastic one?

What kind of pants does he wear mostly? In anything less than jeans, a pocket knife has to be on the smaller size. A peanut goes in buisness casual better than a stockman.

Since he already carries a Leatherman micra, I'll make a wild guess that he likes compact items. Maybe a peanut would be good. But then I'm VERY predudiced toward peanuts. I knew a man once who from 1937 to 1981, carried only a peanut as his pocket knife. it must have worked, he never saw the need to get something else.

I am, as jackknife calls it, a "business casual" guy during the day. Carry my Case Red Bone CV peanut. Does everything, doesn't freak anybody out. Excellent knife.

I think anything up to about 3 1/2 inches works in my business casual pocket, but I, like jackknife, am very fond of peanuts.

Thanks, I'll do the peanut.

I am thinking yellow; it is cheaper, lighter, and classic. This also leaves the lustful upgrade red bone option available to him in case he gets bitten by the bug. The secret to life is always having a goal.

Very clever! I guess they just don't give out PhD's to anybody!

The Case Slimline Trapper is also well worth considering, and it's available in CV and a yellow handle.

I now carry a SAK Super Tinker, but the Peanut was my EDC for quite a while, and I am NOT a business casual kind've guy. My job is down and dirty, often with BIG cutting chores, and my Peanut served me perfectly every day. Never came across anything it couldn't handle, and it cut some pretty impressive things., and mine wasn't even CV. It was a Bone Stag in SS. Peanuts are awesome.

I was in a large knife store last weekend in branson and was quite impressed with the overall quality of every knife i looked at, and there were several---dozen. As far as scale material i usually lean toward yellow but a red bone peanut is a beautiful knife. So as usual it's all in your personal taste, but you can probably rest assured the fit and finish will be equal on both. later, ahgar

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the current red bone - the bright, "fire engine" red that fades to pink at the edges. I prefer colors a bit more muted. I own a couple (including the afore-mentioned Slimline Trapper), but only because they don't make a particular pattern/steel combination in anything other than that handle material.

Old Case red bone is a classic, but the new stuff sorta leaves me cold. Wish they'd stop playing games and just offer CV steel with all handle materials and patterns. Probably cost prohibitive.
