Case CV vs. Buck 420 HC

I'll bet you will see little difference in performance. I've seen people post here that they can not tell much difference between Case CV and Case Tru Sharp/Stainless, and you know Buck 420HC is at least as good as Case Tru Sharp, so therefore I'll bet there isn't much difference, all else held constant. A good comparison would be to take a Case CV stockman and compare it to a similar sized Buck 420 HC.

I've had great experiences with both. They both get the job done and with some daily sharpening, maintain their scary sharpness.

This is an interesting thread. I've often thought to myself that my Buck 503 sharpens as easily, as maintains its edge as long as, my Old Timer carbon stockman. Very similar in performance, in my experience.

I am wondering because where I grew up these two types of knives were the only acceptable ones. It is hard to explain, but the locals don't seem to view Buck as being stainless. For example I have heard many conversations about how bad stainless is but Buck is great. This was said in the context where the speaker didn't realize or care that Buck was indeed stainless also.

I have run into that phenomanon as well, and it mystifies me. For many years I carried a Buck 301 stockman as my main pocket knife, and even some "old timers" would see me use it and comment on Buck being a good knife. Some of these guys were of the very old school that if it was stainless, it must be junk. Its like there was some sort of dual standard at work that I was not aware of.

Now after many years of being a respected brand, I am hearing more and more "Oh, is that one of those chinese made Buck's?" I can only wonder if they shot themselves in the foot.

I would say Buck lost some respect from this move, but this move may be the reason they are still here. I will not buy a China made knife , sorry I just can't carry them for some reason. I just ordered a 301 from an online dealer that had 2 US made 301 left.

As to the Case Tru-sharp Vs Buck, I think there steel is equal most of the time. I have had a few Case knives that were a little on the soft side, but never had a soft Buck. It is all about the HT (since it is the same steel), and both companies have been doing what they do for many many years. Either one will make a great knife you will be happy with.

With the CV vs 420HC, I lean toward the CV. I just like a good ol carbon blade. It seems to take just a slightly better edge.

I really like buck knives and especially their fixed blade knives, but steel for steel i lean toward the case cv. In my experience the cv is easier to get a good edge on and seems to stay sharper a little longer. but either would serve you well. later, ahgar
