O.K. folks fess up which series of knives which you choose and why if you had to make a choice.
Me?.....Well my vote would have to go to OldTimer!

Kap

p.s..............of course I lovem both! :D

Tough choice but I do know that it hurts less when you get that first scratch on an Old Timer. Those first scratches on the Case mirror polished blades are just painfull!

I guess I'll pick Old Timer because my history with Old Timer goes further back than with Case. When I was a kid I could afford an Old Timer on my paper route income but not a Case.

Ive used and owned both. I use to have a case cv yellow trapper that I used for squirrel hunting. the blade of course was quite tarnished, but performed really well. The OT was good, but I personally preferred the case cv.

Its funny I read in a case book that all the old case blades were originally cv.

I wish they still were all CV, Rev. I like that steel a lot. They don't offer much of a selection in patterns or scale materials in it though. A seahorse whittler with smooth bone in CV would be fantastic. Or a congress with black pearl, that would be a dream.

Nothing about modern OT knives floats my boat. A lot of you here like to dis case knives for quality, fit and finish, but in my experience, I'd rate case higher than OT. That's why they cost more. Also, I like the case handle material better. Finally, case is still in business, schrade fell apart due to poor management and left a lot of employees holding a pink slip. Case has had problems, but they've still got it togethere and appears to be profitable.

Are modern OT carbon steel or schrade wonder stainless?

This has been discussed in the Schrade forum. Apparently towards the end - I'm not sure how far back - Schrade was using Schrade+ stainless in some of the Old Timers and marketing it as carbon steel :grumpy:. So to be safe if you buy any Old Timers get one of the older models in the brown box - less likely to be stainless.

Schrade+ works better than Case stainless but it's still stainless. Some in the Schrade forum say it gives Buck 420HC a run for it's money ;).

I don't recall seeing an Old Timer with poor fit and finish except for not so good edge grinds. I've seen gobs of Case knives from the 70's, 80's and later where the blade rub together during opening and closing or have blade/s that are too tight and are lazy.

Bob,
you can get the cv in the amber bone though, its unfortunate they do not extend the handle materials any further. I have an amber bone trapper in CV that's an awesome cutter.

I have an Amber Bone medium stockman. It has a pen blade where the spey would be normally. It is in my regular rotation. I have not seen any Amber Bone congress or whittlers though, and those are my favorite patterns. Anyone know if they ever offered them?

I 2nd that one! I would love to see a whittler, or congress in cv and amber bone!!!!!!

Tough call. Here's my rundown by characteristic:

Steel: I doubt I could tell the difference.
Handles: yellow plastic vs. brown plastic. Tough choice. I guess I'd take the brown; it looks slightly less plastic-y.
Fit and finish: no clear winner. I have seen a couple of sloppily made Case knives, but most are fine. Old Timers always seem well-fit.
Price: Most Case knvies seem overpriced, but the yellow CV trapper isn't too high. With a $15 - $20 Old Timer, you really get your money's worth. And for carrying, I'd rather lose a $20 OT than a $30 Case.

In the end, I'd probably pick the Old Timer because of the aesthetics. But than again maybe not, Old Timers aren't as easily replaced since Shrade went under.

Best Wishes,
Bob

The only decent user whittler Ive seen lately thats not too expensive is the queen carved bone whittler in D2.

It might surprise you guys to know this, but even as late as 1980-81, the vast majority of the Case slipjoint line, and even most of the hunting knives, were CV.

In about 1982, the tide started to turn, and by about 1991 there was almost no CV left at all.

This is quite true, not surprising at all, however there were quite a few that were the, then "newer" cheap 420.

I have several yellow handled CASE knives with cv blades and I am pretty happy with them however they do not hold a edge as well as my carbon steel OLD TIMERS.
As much as I like the yellow handles of the CASE knives" they really are classics" I am one of those strange birds that really like SCHRADE's brown delrin.
So I choose the OLD TIMERS.
