A friend of mine has a case 6347 stockman made in 1977 with carbon steel blades that he is wanting to sell. The knife has been used so it would make a good edc knife. I have never used any of the older case knives with carbon steel, so my question is how does their older carbon steel knives compare to the new knives with cv as far as edge retention and ease of sharpening.

I've owned more older Case knives, than I have newer, but the older stuff is just fine. I don't know for fact, but I doubt they have changed their CV much, if any, over the years...

The 47 series is a great pattern imho. Not to big, and not to small. If it is priced reasonably, buy it and enjoy it

Thanks Mike, I read somewhere that the newer knives are heat treated to a higher rc and that they held an edge longer. I was wanting to see if they was true or not from people that had experience using both.

The older ones are definitely a bit softer but not so much that you'll see a huge difference in day to day use.

Looking at my old copperhead from +/- that era, I would jump right on that knife. Yes, the steel seems a bit softer, but it will take a wicket razor edge and touch up easily. Plus, you get the old CASE fit and finish. That particular steel and knife would be great in the pocket.

The guys are right, maybe a bit softer but...
The grinds of that era are veeeery thin you're gonna enjoy cutting with it. A lot.

I have a 6347 from 70 and one from 79. I really can't tell the difference in the ability to cut or hold an edge from the new 47s.
