my wonderful wife gave me a case humpback whittler for father's day, well, ordered it anyway. it showed up today, and pull on the main blade is about an 8, and the pen and spey blades won't come out at all. I'm pretty sure I know for strong pulls, my queen whittler is a little beast to open, but it seems normal. I'm fairly certain the humpback is completely abnormal, but I thought I'd check here before sending it back for an RMA. I'm not crazy, am I?

The Humpback Stockman I have has good strong pull but nothing like your Whittler! It has to go back I'm afraid, but you will receive an improved user in return, I'm confident.

It shouldn't be like that. I would send it back.

No, it shouldn't be like that at all. Before sending it back, I'd try oiling the joints to see if that wouldn't ease the pull a bit.

I just received a Case medium stockman, and I couldn't open the spey blade without the use of a coin, or pliers (have broken thumbnails before, didn't want to do that again)

this one felt "gritty" on opening, so I thought that a cleaning would help...

I blasted out the joint with compressed air, then hosed it down with wd-40...

wrapped a towel around the blade, and "exercised" it for about a half hour.
put dab of lithium grease on the joint, and then worked the blade for say another half hour

I can now open the spey blade without endangering my thumbnail...

don't know if this would help your whittler - YMMV

ah, already back in the mail for a replacement guys, but thanks for the advice. bill, if I have any other troubles I'll give your routine a shot.

I have G10 version with satin blades. The finish looked fine but felt really coarse. My blades were stout on the pulls and it felt like the coarse finish had something to do with it. Sure enough with a bit of working they did (not as much as above). And the finish on the tang is burnished/polished. The small blades are so low there's bound to be some difficukty in opening.
