Case Gunboat Canoe... Talk to me folks

I need to know if you folks that have this pattern like it. It is a stockman configuration with three blades in a canoe shaped frame. Looks interesting. I am kind of getting that "Gunboat experiment" feeling. You guys know how I am about single blade knives... and canoes...

Isn't the gunboat larger than the standard canoe model? The knives themselves are quite a bit more expensive due to the fact that they are (were?) built in limited numbers.

Show me some gunboats..

I wanted a Gunboat Canoe for a long time. One of our forum friends was kind enough to trade one to me. I like mine. They are indeed bigger than the average Canoe. 4 1/4 inches closed I believe. The blade pulls on mine are nice and tight but not nailbreakers. Excellent snap too. Good, solid knife.

Mine has Jade Bone handles and is serial number 19. I think 100 were made but I'm not sure.

The Case Gunboat a great pattern and definitely larger than a regular canoe. I carry one every day and if I could only have one knife, that would be it. It is a little big at times compared to other traditional patterns but not terribly so. I did modify the spey blade to a spear point, I just find it more useful than a spey. You could make it a clip point just as easy if you wish.

Compared to a stockman, I like it better because the main blade of a stockman is usually a long narrow clip and I prefer the wider and stronger Gunboat spear point main. I also prefer the way the bolsters on the canoe covers the sharp corners of the blades when closed.

Hi,

Here's my Fleet at the dock while in port.:D Top: Butterbean, then regular Canoe, and Gunboat.

I find the Gunboat to be a bit big for pocket carry. So I carry mine in a Case embossed leather belt sheath. I use my Gunboat as my go to hunting knife. Though I'm pretty much an upland bird hunter, I would not hesitate to dress a deer with it. I've used much smaller slip-joints on deer. With my SAK Hiker in my pocket, I have 5 sharp blades plus tools, and a gun that only fires 2 shots before reloading.;)

I don't carry mine as an EDC, but I use it heavily in the fall.

Anyone have pics of one in hand? Been reading about these for a while but I don't have a regular canoe so I'm having trouble picturing just how big they are.

Wanted one since the day I set eyes on one :)

Never got round to it though

Slightly beefier than a jumbo stockman - 4 1/4"

I've considered one on occasion, but decided they were a bit large for what I wanted. The Canal Street Canittler is a smaller three-blade canoe-type knife, but has both small blades on the same end like a Whittler pattern, whereas the Case Gunboat is more like a big Stockman in a Canoe handle.

This is, by far, my favorite slipjoint pattern. The robust build is the reason I prefer the Gunboat to the Jumbo Stockman.

I've got a pair of newer Cases in Blue Bone (which are excellent), and a pair of Case Classics (which are not). I don't have a problem with the current model's TruSharp blades, although I wish Case ran that steel a bit harder (the increased hardness is the only reason I like the Classics).

One heads-up; the Gunboat seems to be a tough pattern for other companies to get right: My Classic models were contract jobs from Blue Grass Cutlery, and both have defective springs which nerf the edges (Case customer service said it wasn't their problem due to the contracted nature). I reground the springs myself for one of the knives, which I EDC. I've seen Rough Rider Gunboats where the tip of the spey blade protruded above the frame because they were trying to avoid the same problem.

Therefore, I'd recommend you stick with the newer Case-built Gunboats, they are real beauties.

Thanks folks. I am not sure I want that much knife though. Something to think about and ponder. I sure like the looks of the ones you guys have posted.

I had the scales replaced with black paper micarta, and like it much better now. Don't have any pics of that though.....

I really like this knife, but would like it even better if it were CV. It is a big folder, which doesn't bother me. One of these days I plan to make a necker sheath for it.

I really wish they made a smaller version...this one is way too big for me, although it looks great :)

quattromori - if you look up the NRA #12720 Stockman, it might work for what you're looking for. Not really that similar to the Case Gunboat, but a nice little Stockman with raised bolsters like the Canoe or Copperhead patterns. (Benchmade had it made overseas.)
