is it possible to case harden infi???

does anyone have any pics of a case hardened busse???

we all know that a case hardened busse would look kick ass, but are there any cons???

anyone know where to send a busse to get case hardened???

thanks....

Why would you try to case harden a metal that's already been heat treated?

I think if there was any need to improve INFI, Jerry would already be on it.

the one and only thing wrong with INFI is it nots rust proof. if it was it WOULD be perfect. and really there is no perfect knife steel...

i just think it would look very nice....

What you are asking about is actually color case hardening, right? Sometimes Jerry sells them that way:

This is what INFI can look like when it comes out of heat treat....

yes, color case hardening.....

wow.....

The short answer is no. To case harden you're looking at temps that will ruin the heat treat that infi is so famous for, and most any other decent knife for that matter. The pictured knife is special since the colors came out that way during HT. Now it may be possible to simulate it chemically or maybe get a rainbow type DLC/nitride coating.

Downside to REAL CCH is that it fades over time. :( Look at an old colt vs. a Turnbull CCH new USFA. Night and day.

I love that new CCH look but am saddened by the faded look. Seems the blues run the fastest. :(

I do not agree. Where I live we have a very high humidity and I use my INFI near and in seawater. I don’t have any problems with rust! My INFI has better corrosion resistance than many so called stainless steel blades I have.

Of course, you have to wipe off your INFI after a bath in saltwater. But that’s not a problem- or?

If you have problems with rust- please give more details and pictures.

i am just saying if they had the rust resestance of the steel benchmade uses on that dive knife they have, INFI Would be perfect.

I am not saying the rusting is a BIG problem i am just saying theres always room for improve ment. In steel it seems that if you put alot of one element that either increases strength or hardablility or what ever it will decrease some type of proformence in the steel... I hope i didn't make it sound like busse rusts alot... :o:o:( they dont, their really good at not rusting!

I also have stainless steels that rust, and the reason for that is its probably cheap steel and a bad HT...

OK, then I understand what you mean Blood Hooves. But one of the stainless steel I have which gives me rust problem is S30V- and that's not a cheap steel. :)

i think stainless is a bad word for all steels (besides that H2 stuff that never rust apperntly) because nothings is "stainless" only a higher resistance to rust. S30V has 14 chromium which isn't that far into the "stainless" relm (13) i have seen a chris reeves sebanza (which is S30V) in the snow for something like 25 days and it did pit (a little) so indead it isn't "stainless"... not to pick a fight :D do you beat up 15 year olds very often? :D;)
