Case Hobo keeps calling out my name...

I am no rich man, so I can't buy every pocket knife that I see. Maybe better that way, or it would become too boring to just be able to get whatever I want (mmmmm... but maybe it would be awesome!). Anyhow, while at a big box sporting good store that carries a decent selection of Case knives... I again found myself looking at the Hobo with amber jigged bone handles, a trapper blade, a fork, and a spoon. I did not buy it, but think at some point I will buy one to add to my collection. It just kind'a facinates me :-)

I have one - it's more of a curiosity for me than anything.

Yeah... it would just be another displayed knife for me... Actually, my displays would probably not work... the Hobo being a bit thick, may not allow the display doors to close! But, I'd figure something out, lol! ;-)

I have one too, and tend to feel the same. Haven't used it. BUT, the ingenuity of the pattern was enough to make me want one. I have one of the earlier versions, lacking the 'spoon'. The tiny size of the spoon wouldn't suit me anyway (for eating), but could be useful for stirring drinks, or as a handy scooper/measuring spoon for other tasks, I suppose.

The tines of the fork are pretty blunt/round at their tips, for my preference. More than once, I've been tempted to sharpen those too. If so, I could see this knife being a pretty attractive steak-annihilating tool. The thin, hollow-grind clip blades on knives like these are perfect steak knives. :)

I've held off so far. They seem too pricey for something that wouldn't see alot of use.

I have a friend who is a Case dealer. I got to handle one a few weeks ago in his shop. The above strikes me as the perfect answer to what a Case Hobo would be. I just couldn't think to seriously about it as any kind of useful tool. Everything on it seemed to be a compromise. A bulky hard to carry compromise. I didn't buy one. He said they are slow movers.

Ka-Bar makes a more practical and much cheaper set - unless "Made in the USA" is the priority (and I can't fault it), I'd go with that rather than the less flexible and harder to maintain Case version.

im thinking id drop a case knife in my pocket & walk in to a fast food joint & get some plasticware

I still love them... might just be a sucker for amber bone and interesting solutions to not-particularly-pressing problems.

Mine is actually on order now. I don't know how much I'll use it, but honestly I'll probably keep it in my daily pack.

I think I'd just buy the outsourced KA-BAR, the Case Hobo, is just a real investment, for more of a novelty knife (for me). Still if it's something you'd use on a daily, or regular basis, I can definitely see getting a Case. Even at that if I were to go camping tomorrow, I'd just take my plastic LMF spork, and stainless Opinel 08 for food. I'm no hardcore camper though.

I know how you feel it just looks so cool and every time I see it I want it just a little more. One day I will buy one.

I own a Kabar hobo set. I never carry it.

For eating from home I like a pocket knife and the Light My Fire titanium spork. Spoon on one end, fork on the other, both sized for real world use.

Apparently the too-small Kabar hobo spoon is larger than the Case Hobo spoon. What’s the point?

I've been seriously thinking about adding one to my collection as well. It's a novelty item to me so if I find a good deal on one then I'll buy it, if not I'll just continue collecting other stuff until the right deal comes along. Can't say that I've ever seen anyone with one let alone using it. Haven't ever read a review either.

Yep..I listened...it wasn't my name it was calling...only yours.:p

I had a similar knife when I was in elementary school. In the 80's. The thing was huge in my pocket. My brother still asks about that knife. And yes I did use the fork and spoon on a Cub Scout camp out.

I've got a stag hobo by case with just the fork and knife blades. It was a gift from my father years ago. The fork is really only good for spearing food. I used to bring it to the annual fund raiser game dinner for the fish and game club back home. This was a really big event held at the old elementary school in my home town. It was perfect for such a meat prominent feast where everyone pretty much was using some sort of " personal cutlery" in a public environment. It does make an excellent steak knife in a camping atmosphere as well ;)

I have friend of mine that has one sans the spoon. Much more pocketable. I'd be more apt to purchase one of those, but I don't believe they offer them like that anymore. Really cool if you can find one.

There were (maybe still are) a lot of those still out there, N.I.B. on the 'auction sites' and other secondary market seller sites. Search on '6254HB SS' for the pattern# (in bone), and 'V5254HB SS' (in 'Vintage Stag', which is what mine is). I'm seeing current listings for both, but they seem to be pricey.

I too have been intrigued by this pattern for many years but havent got one yet...i wiil do so in the near future and will definitely use it in the bush,,,i think theyre very cool...........FEs

I have also looked at these on a regular basis. I find when camping that plastic flatware is too flimsy for steaks etc. and I really hate using plastic. Plust, and Im no tree hugger, I think that we have too much plastic stuff that could easily be replaced by durable re-usable implements. I just like good ol steel eating utensils!
