I thinking of purchasing a Case Hobo to use when I go out of town on business.
Has anyone used the Hobo? Is it any good?
How long is the blade? All I can find is that it's 4 1/8" long closed. Can it be carried onboard aircraft?
Thanks in advance: Jerry

Hi,I just bought two at the last NKAC show, a stag for my wife and a rosewood handle for myself to use camping this year. I haven't had the chance to use them yet but they are very solid and look like they will last a life-time. The blade has a 3 inch cutting edge and is very sharp, I paid about $75 for the two. I hope this helps a little. I heard you could take up to 3 in. onboard an airplane! mike

Hi Yake!

I owe a similar pattern to the Case Hobo. It comes from the German producer Hartkopf. It is great fun to use it for eating french fries or pizza at an Imbiss. People standing around are always curious and impressed.

But for daily use it is to uncomfortable. The fork is to small and the different feeling of the both sides of the handle disturbes me. On one side there are stag scales, on the other side brass. For my lunch break I use a German military tool. This is fork, knife and spoon in normal size fit together in a big can-opener.

This pattern is used in German army since the WWI.

Hi Jerry,

Take a look at Case's web site. They have some nice pics of the Hobo pattern as well as their other knives.

The blade is substantial enough that I'd expect problems with the more strict security folks and at most of the major airports. I know of a couple of guards at our local airport who'd have a coniption fit if you tried to bring it through security. There's also a couple that would want to talk and compare knives - One man in particular would probably let folks carry a Battle Mistress on. Better safe than sorry.

A few years ago I flew down to southern Alabama to visit relatives. I'd been doing weekly flights from Knoxville to San Antonio for almost a year and always had a small pepper spray in my briefcase. I knew you weren't suppose to carry them on, but it never occurred to me. Well, when I went to the airport to return from Dothan, I was detained and had to go into a long discussion about it before they finally decided to just confiscate the spray and let me go. The flight was delayed for about 10 mnutes. Strangely enough, I had a Gerber EZ-Out right next to the spray that they didn't question at all. Just goes to show - laws are laws, people are people, sometimes they meet, sometimes they don't.

I bought a Hobo from Smoky Mountain Knife Works last year. They had a batch special run for them with green apaloosa handles. It's one of the prettiest, and sharpest, knives I own. After buying a bunch of Spydie's, BM's and such, that shiny blade really stood out.
