Hey everybody, i have a question about a case peanut i purchased (its all of yalls fault lol) . I know the shields are glued on but is it supposed to be raised off of the scale so much that you can grab it with a fingernail or am i too picky?

welcome to bladeforums!
might help if we knew what handle material ya had, i.e Smooth vs rough...
my medium stockman in yellow delrin, the shield sits almost perfectly flush with the handle, on my bone handled knives it varies a bit
post a picture!

I posted a pic but it seems like it will only show on a pc, i cant get it to pull up on me phone.. Its the chestnut bone handles. All my others are yellow delrin handles and they are flush also but this is my first bone handled one so i didnt know if this was normal. Ill try to post the pic again.

Judging from those I have, "chestnut bone" is probably jigged. The shield cannot be polished flush without destroying the jigged surface of the scales (same applies to stag scales). On a smooth scale, it would be a lack of finish.

Smooth bone ! Not acceptable. You could probably carefully lift it out (the glue did hardly catch...), scratch the lodgment clean and glue the shield back with a performant glue. Fixed for life. I had to do that on a more expensive Queen Mountain Man... It's harmless and seamless.

Here's the pic linked previously (I'm only seeing the URL, so I've copied & pasted the 'IMG' URL found there, to display it here):

That shield seems too high/shallow. I think I'd take issue with that also. Might be worth sending it back to Case (or to the dealer for exchange).

I have the same exact knife (CV Peanut in Chestnut jigged bone), and the shield on mine is essentially flush to the bone.

I have one in a similar predicament. Wonder if some mineral oil would let me pop the shield off and get it flush. I've sanded the scales to nearly pocket-worn smoothness, but the shield's still high.

I'm betting it would take some sort of solvent to loosen or dissolve the glue underneath. I don't think mineral oil, by itself, would do it; it's pretty non-reactive stuff. I've only ever had one shield come out of a Case knife, and that seemed a fluke (poorly glued in the first place; brand new knife, and the shield literally dropped into my lap as I was admiring it). Otherwise, all the others have remained solidly unfazed by the oil and WD-40 I've used on them.

I'd be cautious with stronger solvents; they can sometimes alter or lighten the coloring on dyed bone covers as well. I've had some bone-handled knives 'bleed' color after using some solvents on them.

Good call, I would have sent it back, too. That one should have never slipped past QC, but it happens. Would love to see pics!
