A friend of mine has an old Case Knife stamped "61048" with "SS" below it. It is exactly like the 61048s manufactured currently, only the Case logo on the handle and on the blade is an older logo. Any idea how long this knife has been manufactured, and how many different logos it has had on it? Any information is appreciated. Thanks!

No, it doesn't. It says "Case" on one line, and then "XX" below it. The logo on the handle says just "Case", but the way both are written is very plain and more block-y. I am only personally familiar with Case knives manufactured in the last 5-10 years, from working in retail hardware stores. My friend was wondering about the age, as well as the approximate range of the value of the knife. The knife is not mint, but I would consider it good, at least. Thanks again!

The knife you speak of has been around since the 40s. It had handles ranging from imitation onyx and delrin, to green, red and plain bone on it. It should also have a few dots on it to help date it.

Knowing the handle material could help date it. But the number of dots under the CASE XX with the 'lightning' SS would help also. Perhaps the best bet would be to place it open on a flat bed scanner and take a pic of it and post it on the Bernard Levine forum.
