So yesterday i went to cabelas yesterday in east hartford, ct and well, i immediately went to the knives counter :o. Talked to a gentleman who said he was an amateur blacksmith and made his own knives. Looked at a case med. stockman and was going to look at a trapper but the girlfriend tore me away (after telling me i couldnt get it because she "needed" a rainbow leek, i taught her well but i'm paying for it, literally!) Anyways, my question is, i have a ton of other knives, a case not being one of them. Would it be worth it for me to get one? I like the look and feel, not too keen on the shiny blades but i can deal if theyre worth it. Are they a good knife? And does cabelas have a good deal on them (med stockman is 47$ for bone i believe) or are there cheaper sources? I want a good sized knife, a little bigger than the med. stockman, no colored bone just natural stuff, a good clipper with a smaller pen knife and a blunt knife or something else useful, maybe a sheepsfoot? I don't really know what case has to offer. I like carbon steel but if i'm going to buy a user i want to keep it under 60. Also, so i can kiss my money goodbye is 80$ for the rainbow leek good...

Thanks. I'm good about the leek, i know a lot about that knife because i had planned on getting one a few years ago. Still getting info on kershaw though. As far as case how are they for users?

If you don't like shiny blades check out their black G10 series. They have a more "working finish" to them.

I can deal with the shiny blades if the knife is nice. I like the copperhead and stockman type knives. I would like three blades. Preferably a larger clipper. I dont really like the texas toothpick types.

Yes the G-10, American Workman and Brown Delrin handle ranges have matte brushed finish and it looks very well with Black G10 I must say.
The other option is to buy a CASE knife with carbon(CV)blades, they soon patina up and are not at all shiny...And certainly you should add a CASE or two to your knife hoard.

There are several online resources for Case knives that will save you money ;)

I would probably start off with a Trapper or Mini Trapper if I were you. They are one of Case's best patterns. Nobody finishes the blades like Case.

They don't have many knives in bone that are not dyed at some level. And stag is probably going to top off that $60 range. But if you limit it to carbon & non-dyed bone, you really are working with a small list....

Here is a regular trapper and mini trapper in carbon; but they do have some dye.

There's a guy on the Case Collector forum wanting $35 for a med. stockman, brown bone...just to give you an idea of where Cabelas is at......I've been there too to check out their knives, and NO, that's not the place to buy.
Smokey Mtn. is gonna charge you about $12 for shipping.....so I say, no, that's not the place to buy.

Sounds like you want the Large Stockman, 3 blades, real work horse, Get the CV blade and it won't be shiny for long, if you use it. About $50.

Go to the Shepherd Hills Cutlery website. They have hundreds of Case knives to look at, and the prices are pretty good, too. Click on "pattern".

I'll second that to go to Shepherd Hills Cutlery. I've bought several from them and they have great service.

Definitely get one! On Case's CV knives, the shiny steel won't remain shiny after some use, it'll take on a cool patina.

You might save a bit by buying online, but I'd say it's wise to pay a little more for the ability to cherry pick the one you want before buying. The fit/finish on recent Case knives is really very good, but some clunkers do make it out of Bradford (if you get a clunker, btw, send it back to Case HQ - they'll do you right).

I like carbon steel but if i'm going to buy a user i want to keep it under 60.

No problem there.

Found a large case stockman cv for $45.46 shipped. a trapper ss for 42.86. I think i'm going to go with the stockman, i like the cv, blades and the handle, oh and the price isnt bad either lol.

Stockman or trapper are some of the best choices for a first slip. Nice call getting the stockman first - ditto on the CV. That was my first too and the one that drew me in. I went from all tactical knives to selling them off and now I own almost all traditional!

What handle material did you get? Look forward to pix!

Well i haven't ordered it yet, just added it to the cart and did the shipping to see how much. I think 45 is reasonable. The medium stockman was 48 at cabelas. How much do you think theyd sell a large for?

If you ordered the large stockman in Amber bone with CV blades , you're going to love it. $45 is a good price ....

The large stockman is my favorite slipjoint pattern, I like having three blades to choose from and the main blade is a nice size.

I'll third on Shepard Hills Cutlery. They eat and sleep Case knives. Customer Service second to none.
