I went to the gun and knife show last weekend, and there was a dealer who had all of his knives at 50% off because he did not have time to run his knife business any more. Anyway, I scored some brand new Spyderco Enduras(old style) for $20.00 and some Case mini-trappers for $17.00. I handled just about every Case trapper and mini-trapper
that he had for sale which was a lot. Every dang one of them were very dull for my taste. I brought the trappers home, and it took me one hour to get both blades of one trappper razor sharp with my 204 sharpmaker. By the way, they were all stainless steel blades. Does anybody else feel that Case does not sharpen their blades very good from the factory? Or is it just me? And why is their stainless so dang hard to sharpen? Thanks, Big D1

Your experience with Case is not unique. Many Case knives come dull out of the box. I think that Case knows that many of their buyers are collectors who will never use their knives and that those who will use them can sharpen their soft, 420 steel blades. At least that's what I think.

Big D1, your experience is typical of Case knives. I don't think they expect them to be used. I bought three Case knives this year And I am not impressed with any of them. At least you paid what they are worth.

Being a Case Collector, I do like to have an out of the box ready to go knife, and I am not at all impressed with the Case knives that I have gotten in the past two years.

Big D1 - this dealer you speak of, it wasn't Dakota Knife & Tool was it? Thomas Decoteau is the owner - kind of heavy-set fellow, dark hair, mustache, and speaks with a heavy Southern accent. Was this the guy? I always visit with him at the Charlotte, NC gun shows and last time I saw him he told me that he was getting out of the business. If so, I hate to see him give it up. He is a real stand up guy IMHO.

Anyway, in the past I have examined NIB Case knives at shows and some I noticed had cutting edges with burrs on them. I mean, the burr could easily be wiped off by using a Spydie 204, but when one buys a new knife, one expects that it come perfect out of the box. I have no idea why they were even shipped from the factory in that condition. I have also heard of one guy who laid down money for the first Tony Bose collaboration (slimline trapper) and returned it beause the workmanship wasn't up to par. Seems that every company goes through their period of QC problems, and Case is no exception.

As John Juranitch puts it, some people are knife makers, but not edge makers. Case doesn't even try.

Cases are just like people. Some good and some not so good.
Been collecting them for a lot of years.
