Well I did it. I ordered a Weaver Jack (semi-hawkbill) and a Sleeveboard (wharncliffe) in Antique Blackbone. Now I am hoping all the hype I read is correct. It's not easy for us old dogs and new tricks you know.

You know it is what it is when it comes to the differences between a GEC and a Case. I think you will like them. Then again if you are biased going in a GEC may do nothing for you. It all comes down to what you appreciate and what matters/works best for you. Old dog or not.

Pics or it didn't happen :-p

Good luck for your leap :)
I got my first GEC recently, and I'm happy with it. Hope it will be the same for you, but hey, after all, we're not all the same, so the only way to find out is doing what you are doing, and enjoying the discovery.
+1 for the pictures...especially of the weaver jack. By the way, did you get the single bladed one, or the two/three blade version?

The only thing I could see you frowning about would be the heavy pull, but GEC has lightened that up in the past few years.
My #23 is a Hoss, and the majority of people I show it to can't even open it.
And on the other hand, my Consuctor pattern has a very light pull with very little snap.
But I still love them.
You may have to do some sharpening at first, but they are also great users

Yeah, I know how you feel. As far as traditional knives go I've been a Case buyer since the 70's.

I was looking at a #72 this morning, and almost pulled the trigger. I trust my friends here that say how good the GEC's are, so i know they are great knives, but I'm still having a little trouble pulling the trigger.
I do see a #72 in my future soon.

Ken,

The 72's are known for blade play. Just to put that out there.

I'd be shocked if you don't like 'em. The sleeveboard is a stubby little thing and lots of folks say they're too small for their hands. It's a tank of a knife and is very pocket friendly, thus the appeal IMO. The weaver jack is on the 56 dogleg frame which happens to be a favorite of mine. I only wish they'd release a single blade clip or spear model as I believe it would prove more useful than the h'bill blade. Enjoy your new knives.

No bias here. I jumped with both eyes open and high expectations. Pics next week when they arrive.

I look forward to the pics. I didn't mean biased as a bad thing. I would be biased if I had used a particular product all my life :)

I'm sure they will be nice. I got the single, semi-hawbill on the WJ. Photos when knives arrive.

Having a few of each (sad I know), I'd go for the #73 pattern over the #72. The #73 comes with a liner lock too if you're after a bit of extra security:)

It all sounds good. If I can't open them I'll have the little lady do it. LOL

May as well just go ahead and jump. I'll meet you at the bottom of the cliff.

Thanks, I'm getting excited now. I have been needing a good hawkbill.

The single-blade Hawkbill will present no problems in opening I can assure you, the lack of half-stop helps here too. It's a super and unusual knife.

I'm sure you will like the knives and will want others, but I doubt if it will put you off CASE either! Why would it? Knife marques are not like jealous women you know:D:eek:

I was a Case man big time, they were the only knife maker... to me. Times have changed and so has my collecting habits, when I finally broke down and gave them a try and it was a great decision. I went in with the idea that the F&F would pale in comparison to my beloved Case knives, when I received my first GEC the switch went off. I haven't bought a Case in recent years, but I still appreciate their knives.

GEC has a different feel to them, but they are a much smaller and different company. I'm a strict user of GEC knives and I have enjoyed many tests with their knives, I have gained a trust of their quality.
Right now it may seem a bit alien, but once you get one in the pocket for a while, I'm sure you'll be hooked.

I know all to well. I am a CaseBenchmadeSpydercoBuckBeckerGrohmanVictorinoxWengerKershawPumaTopsMoraRemingtonBuck-HoodBuck-Tops....................man actually. Now i will have to fit GEC in there.

The Single Blade Weaver has the Easy Open feature and a blade pull of about 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 being extra light and 10 being a Bear Trap. The modified Hawkbill and bone handles makes it an attractive EDC Knife. This knife just screams "Work Knife" to me. The 26 Sleeveboard with the Wharncliffe main blade is also known as the "Little Carver". It has a blade pull of 8 or 9 on the same scale. It is somewhat small, but the heavy Wharncliffe blade is ideal for some REAL Whittlin' work.
