After doing some digging, I can usually find out how long the blades on a traditional knife are (why it's not a standard stat in product listings, I don't know), but I've got a stumper: The Case Medium Stockman, pattern 90. This is the equal-end "cigar" pattern, not the serpentine or the equal-end version with square bolsters; it has clip point, sheepsfoot, and spey blades, and I'm looking at SS not CV.

I did my homework and came up dry, so I asked the sellers of a few that I'm interested in . . . and got three different answers! One said 2 5/8", two of them said 2 1/4", and the fourth said "about" 2 1/2". I've never run into this problem before. 2.5" is my EDC blade length limit, and I'd hate to buy one of these and find out it's actually 2 5/8".

If you happen to own one of these, would you mind measuring the clip point blade from tip to bolster and settling this for me?

Do you happen to know the closed length? Usually the blade length is about an inch shorter than the closed length.

It's 3 3/8" closed.

I know the rule of thumb, but it's the "usually" and "about" that send me in search of more precise measurements. ;)

2 1/4" from the frontmost part of the bolster to the tip. 2" from tip to the front of the tang.

I wish you hadn't asked, it made me go and get out my only one in that pattern out to measure it. Now I am reminded of what an excellent little pattern it is, with the fully sunk joints, swedged (on both sides) main clip blade, and low-riding sheepsfoot and a spey variant that is much more like the GEC patterns.

Dangit, now I have ANOTHER knife I need to regret not carrying more often. :( ;)

Thank you very much! I appreciate you digging it out to take that measurement.

My wallet is weeping, because this pattern looks great and now I have no choice but to buy one. Sorry to force yours back into rotation, John! ;)

Oh it's worse than that - the one I have is new-in-box never sharpened or carried, from the Case family brands special editions they did back in 2009, and have not repeated since. This one is a "Crandall Cutlery" version. So if I want to carry one, I will need to buy another one so as not to mess up that one.

Now you see how my twisted little brain works. It's like having furniture that's too nice to sit on. I'm saving it for the estate sale. :)

Thanks for the confirmation and photo, Railsplitter!

And John, you have my sympathy again. That does sound like a terrible problem to have. :D
