I have been really itching to get one of these case medium stockmans 63087 . Would anyone have some experience with them? should I go with CV or SS?

I've not had one, but I kinda like the smaller slipjoints these days. I've been itching for the equal end stockman in this size.

I prefer the CV steel, but some of the red bone covers in CV don't get the best looking dye job (don't know why). Might fix that with some of that oil based leather dye though.

They are actually 3 3/8" long. The 6344 is the 3 1/4" version. Note that the current 63087 models do not have a sheepfoot blade. They are clip, spey, and pen. Essentially it's the Case Pen knife (32087) with a second spring and a spey blade added.

Here are a few comparison pics. Sorry for the pic quality, the knives look better than they appear here:

I wouldn't personally buy one again without being able to hand pick one in person. The ones I've handled had horrible blade rub. My dad bought one online & couldn't even open the spey blade without pushing the sheepsfoot blade out of the way. Sent it in for repair & 2.5 months later the replacement came but they sent the wrong knife. They are a huge company & mass produced so these kinds of issues are just more likely to happen. If you can hand pick one though they are an excellent knife especially at their price point.

I've come to prefer a good German made Boker Tree. Close to the same price as Case but I have had better luck in the fit & finish department. :)

Oh & I much prefer the Case CV steel to stainless.

One thing to keep in mind with looking for a Case "medium stockman" is that the name applies to many patterns that differ in size and blade types.

6344 - 3 1/4" squared bolster very slight serpentine, clip, sheepfoot, pen
63087 - 3 3/8" rounded bolster serpentine, clip, spey, pen
63090 - 3 3/8" rounded bolster equal-end cigar, clip, sheepfoot, spey
63032 - 3 5/8" square bolster serpentine, clip, sheepfoot, pen
6318 - 3 5/8" rounded bolster serpentine, clip, sheepfoot, spey

(first number varies - 3 = yellow Delrin, 5=stag, 6=bone or jigged delrin)

I have one. I really like the size. Mine has pretty bad bladw rub but it doesn't bother me much.

I have one Case 53087 and one Case 63090; both have decent snap, no blade wobble, and typical blade rub (equal to a 6318, no more, no less) - good knives for the money. Just a bit small for my taste in an EDC. OH

032 is my go to EDC. Great W&T, beautiful chestnut bone (lucky to have a good die job), CV, very minor blade rub...........just about perfect.

The 63032 and 6318 are a good size at 3 5/8. The 63032 is on it's way back from Case for the pen catching on the nail nick of the sheepsfoot. I figured the 6318 was about perfect w/t that I was compelled to send it back. We'll see how it is, but I thing the two will be missing pocket time from my CEC 81. The 63032 is considerably thinner than the 6318. I believe the square bolsters to pocket carry easier than the round.

Navihawk,

I would have never thought that there would be a thickness difference between those knives. I always thought the only difference was rounded bolsters and Turkish clip.

Are the blades thicker on the 18?

Jim

Jim, the 6318 has a really thick center liner. the blades are the same thickness. I think the art of crinking the blades to make them fit is lost. I sent it back to Case because the sheepsfoot was hideously deformed so that the edge was wavy. I think that's why the pen caught in the nail nick. You couldn't even sharpen some parts of it. I hope they made it better. It carries nice.

I have the 6344 (clip, sheep's foot and pen) in red bone with CV blades and I like it. (Mine doesn't have the rubbing issues.) It can get scalpel sharp too. Very nice size, but i would've preferred the rounded bolsters, but did not want the spey blade.

Thanks for all the info. I recently inherited a 63087 much like the one in JC57's post, and now I have a much better idea of what it is. This will likely have a place in my pocket for quite a long time.

I absolutely agree about the crinking. I have a Case medium Stockman with square bolsters and the pen blade. The blade rub is terrible, but on a carry knife I don't mind.
That said, the Old Timer 80T full size stockman that I won here (thanks again Cory:)), has a really well done and unabashedly extreme crink. I don't think you'd see it done right like this these days. I don't think it's so much about Case not being able to do it and more about the general population shipping back "bent" knives to Case as defective. Kinda like the thing Gerber ran into with their Mk II with a 5 degree cant.

Anyway, happiness is a knife with well done crinkjng:)
