Case "medium" stockman?

Forgive my lack of knowledge here. I'm just getting into the world of traditional after carrying a SAK for the past ten years.

Is there such a thing as a "standard" stockman? I see Case has a medium and a large and when looking at very very old catalog pages where they were just identified by number, the stockman one has the dimensions of the current medium stockman.
So I'm just wondering if the current medium stockman is the same thing as the original stockman you would have been able to get back in the good old days.
My grandpas knife was a kabar that I have identified as a large stockman and boy is it huge. I love the medium stockman but I'm turning really traditionalist and am basing a lot of my edc on the principle of "it had to have been around prior to 1960". So what size stockman would have been the "popular" one back in the 50s? What we know today as the medium?

Thanks in advance!

Case has 5 different patterns they call "Medium Stockman" ranging from 3 1/4" closed to 3 5/8" closed.

'44
'087
'090
'032
'18

Next comes the regular Stockman (no size designation), the '47, 3 7/8" closed.

Next above that is the '75 Large Stockman, 4 1/4" closed.

These two are the 63032 and 6344 Medium Stockman patterns:

63087 Medium Stockman:

6318 Medium Stockman:

6347 Stockman:

The 6347 is the "standard" Stockman. Also available in Yellow Delrin, 3347.

I wish I had some side-by-sides of the entire Case stockman family. One of these days...

I can't comment on what size Stockman was "popular" back in the 50's. I wasn't around then.

I can say that most, if not all, of the patterns in John's post above were made by Case back in those days. If I were in your shoes I would choose the pattern that best suits me and then look for one with the XX era tang stamp. (Used by Case from 1940-1964) Or maybe even the Tested era tang stamp (1920-1940) just to be sure it was made prior to 1960.

I'm under the impression that Case did not stamp pattern numbers on the tangs until 1949 so if you could find one with the XX era tang stamp and no pattern number it would have theoretically been made 1940-1949.

Wow! Thanks guys!! I did find some other threads with comparison pictures, but if any of you have all of the lineup, or just a few, more comparisons would be awesome! I would absolutely love to see them next to my current SAK Pioneer or Farmer for reference.

I have a SAK Farmer and Pioneer, along with most of the current Case Stockman patterns (with the exception of the Humpback and Sowbelly). First chance I'll have to do any photo lineups will be tomorrow. I'll try to get you some comparisons.

I tried to shoot some comparison shots, but the artificial lightning produces some horrible colors [emoji4]

Anyway, here are some pics of a case 6344 (smallest medium stockman at 3,25 inch) and a Pioneer. The case looks much better in real life [emoji6]

Ok, I had some time today to set up some pictures.

Here is a grouping of one of every Case Stockman pattern I own:

Left to right: 6375 Large Stockman, 6392 Stockman (discontinued), 6347 Stockman, 6318 Medium Stockman, 63032 Medium Stockman, 63090 Medium Stockman, 63087 Medium Stockman, 6344 Medium Stockman, 63033 Small Stockman (discontinued), 6327 Small Stockman (discontinued), and 6333 Small Stockman.

Next shots are just the 4 currently produced in the larger sizes. Large Stockman, Stockman, and two Medium Stockman patterns:

Since you were interested in the '47 regular stockman, here are three variations in handle material. These are, from top to bottom: 6347 Amber Bone SS, 5347 Stag SS, 3347 Yellow Delrin CV

And the same knives showing thickness. The yellow Delrin handles are noticeably slimmer than the Amber Bone, and of course much slimmer than the stag (in the middle).

Zolthar and jc57...
You guys are simply awesome.

Looks like I'm getting a 3347 soon!!

Thanks!
I think you'll be pleased with it. The Delrin handles and rounded bolsters make it an easy pocket carry for a knife of its size. I carry the Amber Bone SS in the picture above fairly often. When I have carried the 3347 I was surprised at how flat it felt compared to the bone handled version.

The 3347 is available in both CV and SS so you can pick your preference. I believe both are exclusive to a particular Case dealer, so you'll have to buy from them (I got my 3347 from an individual off the 'bay a while back for a slightly better deal.)

jc57, thanks for posting all those pictures! I've been looking at Case stockmans for a while but I'm having trouble deciding which I like. I think the biggest problem I'm running into is that I like the square bolsters more than the rounded ones, but I also prefer having the spey blade over the small pen blade, and it looks like you can't get square bolsters and a spey blade in the medium size (only in the large stockman, which I'm afraid will be too big for pocket carry, although I do like it).

I guess the solution is to get a medium stockman with the square bolsters (but no spey), a medium with the spey (but round bolsters), and a large stockman. :)

Actually,

I salivated over the Large for a long time. I got one and I like it very much. Carry it often. But I find I wish I had looked into the mediums and regulars a little more. A 3 7/8 inch is what I would call "my" perfect sized stockman. The 47 is next on the list.

John, I agree with btb01 in thanking you for posting the very helpful comparison shots of Case stockman options! (I'm not always impressed with the looks of Case's amber bone handles, but you have some excellent specimens, IMHO.)

My conclusions are opposite his, though; I definitely prefer the rounded bolsters with the "standard" blade combination (clip, sheep, spey) and I think I'll be on the look out for a regular '47 or a medium '18.

Funny, I was just looking for a medium with round bolsters, but a pen in place of the spey. Seems if the config. is right, the bolsters are wrong.

Also, don't forget this guy. I bought it two months ago, and it's been in my pocket everyday since. Mostly in a pocket slip too. I even tried to force a change last week, as I stood over my options, but again back into the pocket. Granted it's ideal for my work right now. Typically I prefer GEC over Case, but man, I am really diggin' this knife as an edc. If GEC would make a #66 Calf Roper in this configuration,(or a Northwoods, are you listening Derrick?), it too would quickly become a favourite.

I have the amber bone Case medium stockman which carries well but I'm not enamored with the relatively shallow height of the blades and prefer the larger blades on the modern stockman and my old 1973 Case 6392 4 inch stockman. In fact I recently bought a Buck 301 which is 3 7/8 inches which will probably alternate with the old Case for EDC.
