Case Mini-Trapper oversharpening, common?

Is factory "over-sharpening" a common occurrence?

I've noticed on my new Case Mini Trapper that the main blade appears to have been overly sharpened. The edge is somewhat irregular, and some "extra" metal appears to have been removed. Sometimes when I look at it, I like it. Other times, it kinda bugs me. Is this is commonplace with Case, and other manufacturers. I've recently bought 3 other Case brand knives, and all of them are fine. Thanks for any feedback.

Here is a link to a thread I posted elsewhere on this topic. It shows a picture, albeit not a particularly good one. Still, if you look closely you can see how the blade is a bit "curvy", and appears to have some extra metal removed.

I couldn't get your pic to come up. I do have mini's ranging from early 70's to current production, and went and pulled them all out.
I really couldn't find a flaw in any of the grinds, they are nicely done and seem to be very consistent...
I'm guessing, if you are the original owner, yours somehow slipped through Q.C. If it was previously owned, that owner may have tried sharpening it and caused the issues you are seeing..
If it is really noticeable and your unhappy with it, contact Case.
They have outstanding service and will fix the problem for you... They are great people.....

Thanks for the response. I may do that, but I haven't decided yet. The blade edge is a little concave, just in front of the tang stamp. Other than that, it's not too bad. I really like the jigging on this knife, it was the nicest (IMO) in the case. I did purchase the knife new at a local hardware store.

Would appreciate it if others could view the picture, and tell me their opinions on the blade.

That link doesn't work.
Under the picture you should see several lines of code, one is labeled "IMG Code".
Copy this information and paste it here to post a pic.

Edit: Wow, that worked. Thanks very much for the info.

Good job, now you can post lot's of cool knife (and gun) pics.

In all honestly, I'm not sure that I see anything wrong with the Mini-Trapper. I might see a slight "curviness" to the clip blade, but it's so faint in this picture (to my failing eyesight) that I am not even sure I really see it.

From what I see (or don't see as the case may be), you have a darn nice pair of Trappers, and any defect to the blade shape is so slight that it will no-doubt sharpen out in time.

markksr,

I really do appreciate your opinion. It is a little hard to see in the picture, but it is probably pretty insignificant. That is why I bought it, and haven't sent it back up to this point. I just thought I'd get some opinions from others more in the know than myself before doing anything with it. After reading your post, I'll most likely keep it as is.

I've been surfing this site for a while, and I must say that I'm pretty impressed with the many helpful, and knowledgable members on these forums.

Thanks again.

I believe all the Case Mini Trappers I've seen have this blade shape. I know what you mean though, I'd like to see a Mini Trapper identical to the Large Trapper only on a smaller scale.

Let's take this sharpening/over sharpening topic over to "Maintenance" where some of the edge-sperts can chime in. Frankly, I'm rarely if ever satisfied with a factory edge and most all are put to the stone sooner rather than later.

Well, I might regret it later, but I got a little impulsive and returned the mini-trapper to the store. I exchanged it for a Case Amber Bone Canoe with CV blades. Date on the box, and blade shank indicate 2001 manufacture, so it's been in the display case for a little while. It was the display model. Blades are ground much better.

I really liked the Mini-Trapper, and might look for another in the future. I just decided that a little too much metal had been removed by someone other than myself.;)

Thanks again for all of the feedback.

Come back to the Traditional Forum and post some pics of that Canoe, why don't ya'.:)

the clip blade on my Case stockman was a bit recurved, likely from over sharpening at the factory.

i think that a bit of wavy edge is most easily seen on the coping/pen/sheepsfoot blades. i have seen a few examples, but nothing that wouldn't be rubbed out with a few sharpenings.

mine is still recurved, because i don't sharpen it too often... it is slowly becoming straighter though.

It would have evened out with time. Oh well, I think I like the Canoe.

I'll post some pictures.
