My mother in law gave me a Case Muskrat that is very dull. Should I send it back to Case or sharpen it myself. What do you think?

It's definitely worthwhile to learn to sharpen your own knives, if you can. There's pretty good sharpening jigs and stuff out there if you want to go that route, or just practice freehand sharpening for a while

Sharpen yourself. I literally just finished sharpening my Case Muskrats before I clicked onto bladeforums. Takes almost no time on ceramic- use the bottom of a coffee mug and make super light passes- stainless or carbon will sharpen up in seconds. I alternate carrying one or the other for work and they gotta be the most relaxing knives to sharpen- easy shape, thin geometry and long edges!

I sharpen all my own, including full reprofiling and whole new edges. I’ve never sent one in before.

That being said, if you don’t have the skills yet then you could look and see if there is a trusted, qualified sharpening service near you.

Or, if nothing else, If you want to pay shipping both ways to me I’d be happy to sharpen it up for you.

My opinion is Case butchers their edges. Even if I was a piss poor sharpener, I’d elect to do it myself.
Case sharpened one of my knives sent in for repair. They did a good job. Factory fresh, I’ve found the edge varies by price. Bose/Case have a very good edge, $50 CV has a decent edge but put on with a coarser grit. The only flaw I’ve found out of the box was a wire edge which was easy to fix.

I haven't had Case sharpen any knives for me, but the I agree with the rest of this statement. I'll also add that the half dozen or so Damascus bladed Case knives I've had were sharpened to my satisfaction.

I’ve found several problems, including knives that couldn’t cut paper. I’m not saying Case could or should do better- I just think even a beginning knife sharpener could do a better job than some examples I received. I wouldn’t ever send one to case for a new edge.

I decided to sharpen the Muskrat myself. I used my 1"X 30" belt sander. Running a silicon carbide 1000 grit belt. I am very happy with the results. The knife is now worth carrying and still has its mirror finish which was something I was concerned about. Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement.
