Which of these knives is better for frequent use? Is one more sturdy than the other? How do they hold up to repeated disassembly and reassembly?

I have had the Kabar variety for about two years now and am quite happy with it. It also has a spoon and a lockback knife which the Case lacks. I have had no problems with reliability in terms of putting it together and taking it apart.

Thanks Kevin, I decided to go with the Ka-bar. May the peace and strength of the Spirit guide you in all matters.

I have been thinking of getting a hobo tool to stick in my hip pouch. They have a cheap one at walmart, but I have a feeling it would just fall apart. Anyonde else have experience with the kabar version? i have seen it on Amazon and it looks just right.

I have the super cheapo one from walmart... I keep it in my lunch bag for when utensils are scarce. It actually works really well and is better quality than you might expect.... not to say it's great... but it has not fallen apart.

I have my eye on replacing it with the titanium one from Knives of Alaska for sanitary reasons. I just have a hard time spending $60ish bucks on a hobo tool, and the cheapo one is the perfect size. The KoA tool is smaller w/ a smaller knife blade.

I remember that lots of kids in my scout tribe have these hobo utensil thingies. To me, they are pretty much rubbish. The fork and spoon are too small, there's always food in the pivot unless you clean it thoroughly and if you are like me (and the rest of my tribe, and most other german scouts) and use the german mess kit which is very deep, you'll be sticking your whole hand into the pot just to get some food out of it. I like to pack a wooden spoon and a few pairs of disposable chopsticks. I get a 10 pack of wooden spoons (each 10" long) for ~ $3, so I don't really worry about them or the chopsticks (25 pairs for $3). If you're cooking over an open fire, it'll be a pain to stir your cooking food with a short fork or spoon, that's where the long handle of these spoons really comes in handy.

It's probably just my dislike for folders. They seem to always have problems with the pivot or the lock, blade play or other little problems that just keep you from using them efficiently. Fixed for me, please. Whether it's a spoon or a knife.

The K-Bar version is great. The thing is sturdy and small. I carry mine in my Maxpedition bottle holder kit. The lock back knife is great. it could be used as a stand alone knife if you needed it to. I ran mine over a strop a few times and actually used it to shave the hair off my arm to keep a duct tape bandage from pulling out all my hair :-/ The little case it comes with has a good belt loop on it as, and it is easy to take apart and put back together. I would defiantly recommend it.

Some pics I took for my bottle holder set up post:

Best,

the only problem I've had with the cheapo from walmart is that it uses the spoon and the fork to secure the pins holding it together, so once you open the either the spoon or the fork, one of the two pins is no longer secure. FWIW I switched to the titanium spork by Light My Fire and have been quite happy.

Best,

thanks for the photos

Will think about ordering one

I've had a Kabar Hobo set since either 1995 or 1999 (I got it when I graduated from either high school or college) and it has worked very well. It is more of a lunch bag item for me since it is fairly heavy. While packing around, I carry a Light my Fire Spork that is plastic because I have not dropped the coin on a Ti version yet. :)

I have had both. The kabar I had I haven't seen in 20 years. The Case I have is like a piece of art compared to the Kabar. I don't really want to use it it looks so good! The kabar is purely utility, not pretty. But it works fine.

IMO I would rather pack a set of lexan silverware and a decent lockback knife.
