I have two Case pattern 87: both are under 3”, serpentine shape, and both are 2016s. One is a yellow 2 blade pen knife and one is black 2 blade Jack knife. When I looked this pattern up it seems to also be on medium stockman. I guess I expected the 87 to be a design designator. They are the same length, same bolsters but they are different styles. Can anyone explain this to me?

87 can be a 3 blade stockman or 2 blade Texas jack. Shouldn’t be a pen knife. Post up a pic. Use postimg site. It’s easy to use

Moving this thread to the Traditional Forum.

One of the big Case Master dealers has a list of every pattern Case has issued in the last 10 years. It has two entries for 87. A Medium Texas Jack, and a stockman.

The pen knife pattern is a #83. Could be a misstamp, or you might want to make sure it really says "87" on the pen knife. Or they could have put the wrong blade on the knife, since the same blade is used on both patterns.

WR Case has their own forum on their web site. You may need to ask there about a pattern discrepancy such as you list.

It's the frame designation. The '087 pattern comes in a 2-blade jack, 2-blade pen, and 3-blade stockman version.

I have some of each.

The lower left in this photo is a 2-blade 62087 pen:

The one in the middle right (3 o'clock position) is a 62087 Jack:

The one at the top of this photo is the 63087 Medium Stockman, notable for the lack of a Sheepfoot blade but instead having a short spey and a pen blade:

Sorry for the group photos but that's all I have handy at the moment.

I have the 32087 Pen version in yellow Delrin, too, but no photos of that one.

They have several variants of each of the three styles on that frame in current production. Just go to one of the major Case dealer web sites and search for "087" and you can see them all. The actual Case manufacturer's web site search feature sucks.
