Case Quality on trapperlock

I recieved my second Case knife today and I love it...... Except for the massive amount of front to back and side to side blade play! Now, I am not posting this thread to bash Case and I do need to state that I did not order this knife direct from Case knives or a super reputable dealer. I am going to see if the seller will replace it for me. I just wanted to ask if this is a common problem on the case trapperlock? I love the design and LOVE the smooth chestnut bone handles, but the blade play bothers me and when I pay this much for a knife, I expect reasonable lock up. The overall fit n' finish is not that great, I wonder if I was sold a factory second.. does case mark their factory seconds? Thanks for any info in advance guys!

I have 9 traperlocks, the big thing i have seen is if you use one and get anything by the locking mech the blade will come shut so i stopped useing mine, alot of them the lock just barely catches the blade,as far as I know Case doesnt sell seconds,I have a few traperlocks that the tip of blade is sticking up,I have a few that they are flawless just a few out of 9 though

I'm not sure if I should return it, it does not really affect the use of the knife. It mainly bothers me and makes me wonder about the QC of the company. When I flip the knife open, the liner lock doesn't touch the blade at all, it just free floats all the way over, it does however keep the blade open when I push down on it. Just not sure what to do.

I would send it to Case to see what they would do about it.
if they say it's acceptable for the knife, I'd return it and get a slippy.

The quality spectrum is all over the place on these it seems. The ones i like best have just a bit of side to side play, but lock well and flick open and closed easily. Some are too tight and don't flick open one handed. Some are down right sloppy like yours. You might check with your seller for a better example and if there is no satisfaction there, send it back to Case. They can adjust it.

Seems to me that most knives I've seen with both a backspring and locking liner rely mostly on the backspring to hold the blade open; the locking liner is just intended as an added safety measure.
But, bottom line, if you're not happy, don't keep it.

Maybe I just got lucky. Mine locks up tight with little to no side to side or up down movement.

The problem here is is what the OP's perception of massive is. It may be minor to some and even unnoticeable to others.

Contact the seller and see if he will give you a refund. Failing that, send it off to Case but that is no guarantee that it will be any better when you get it back.

I only have one and it is the Halloween one, I have not used it but out of the box there is no blade play and lock up is fine. Case may have done better QC on these than they used on other knives. Case Customer service is very good if you decide to go that route.

I see what you mean, and I made sure to ask myself if I was being unreasonable. It is a lot of blade play by anyones standard, I did not even have to grab the blade to hear the click of the back and forth play. The liner lock was probably .015-.020 off of contacting the blade, it was like the blade play on those chinese made gas station knives, there was also a gap in the liners on the back. A really bad one snuck out of the factory, and i'm not going to let this ruin my positive first experience with case knives. I talked to the dealer and he told me to send it back along with a note explaining what was wrong with it. Hopefully the replacement I get will be a touch better. It is going to make me think twice about buying another traditonal that has a liner lock though.... I just might keep it to slippies
