Hi All,

I did some searching around for pictures of Case Red Bone and found a few pictures of some seriously sweet oldies. I looked at stock photos of the currently available line but the stock photos never seem to do the handles justice. What's the story with the new line compared with the old? Anybody care to share some pics of Case Red Bone?

Thanks in advance. :thumbup::thumbup:

I know what you mean. A few months ago I was looking at a Mini Muskrat in red bone that looked a little more like "pink bone" or maybe "salmon". The color actually kept me from buying it.

I have a hard time calling the current Case offerings red bone. The same holds true for the old green bone.
The coloring of the bone that Case offered years back, was just incredible, and imho some of the nicest every offered on production knives...

Heres a few to get you started. If I can ever figure out where the wife moved the picture files to , I'll add some more.

Hi jazub -

Sweet pictures of some very nice slip-joints, gentlemen. Here are my additions to a cool thread.

I had this trapper in bright red bone. These were sold in a Christmas blister-pack with a tin in 2006 I believe.

It has since been re-scaled by redrummed with pictured jasper due to the crack in the scale, which can be seen here.

I also have this humpback whittler that I was lucky to purchase here from member Thomason - it's a beauty and I love to carry it.

I suppose that this older "pocketworn" counts as a red bone example, but not the bright red as the two above show -

yeah, Paul, the red and green both seem to have neon qualities to them now -but that really could just be too much contrast or bright lighting.

thanks for sharing some pictures Mike and Waynorth. real beauts you've got there. pictures of the old red (and green for that matter) show very rich, deep color. the red is warm, almost maroon, and the green looks warm with tinges of brown. really great colors! i wonder what could have caused them to change?

if anybody has pics of the new red, it would be great to see and compare. if they're nicer than what they appear, i would be in to try one out.

thanks again

**edit to add**
thanks for those pics, mqqn. don't know how i missed it. the bright red looks cool in your pictures. i may have to try a new one out to check it out. they are doing them in cv, too

One thing to keep in mind is that the bone dyes
have changed (several times) due to EPA regulations & mandates.

So it's not always the manufacturers fault that they can't make
them like they used to.
I bet that's one reason oldies keep appreciating. :D
My oldest old red is this 6347.
The '71 6392 seems to qualify as kinda old red.
Then the MM set old red isn't too bad.

Poor picture, but the 047 on the right has gorgeous red bone from the mid 70's.Unfortunately the other side is a beautiful chocolate brown.See,there was always something to complain about.

Actually there was a lot of white showing in the knife that I mentioned. Like they didn't use enough dye or something. I still want one in red bone but I will have to wait for the local brick and mortar shop to get another one in.
I guess I'm picky. :D

The old red bone looks so much better! I lucked up on this red bone and it has little fading and no pink but it is too bright other wise! Please Case bring back the old red bone!

wow, night and day. thanks for that comparison, Seals. surprising.

mqqn, the "pocket worn" and standard red look to be quite different as well. thanks for showing that difference. i think i prefer the "pocket worn."

Case old red pocket worn bone stockman is what got me going on Case. The local farm store was closing out knives and I gave it a try and it quickly became my man jewelry. It is a dark red and I really like it, so I have since ordered two others and they are light red to pink and do not look near as good. Normally do not like colored knives but the Red seems to be the exception to just natural. Nice looking photos thanks for sharing.

Nice examples being shown here. I've heard from more than a couple old time Case collectors that real redbone stopped with the Case XX period. I think they resent the name "redbone" being usurped by the handles of more modern knives. It's an example of language changing more than anything.
But I can see the appeal of the older XX stuff. It really hasn't been duplicated. These are not red enough for some, but I think they are just right!!

I wonder if they cause cancer???

NAH!!!;)

If they do Charlie, there are a few of us that are doomed :D

There are a lot of great pictures in this thread...

You bring up a good point. The XX era knives are more subdues that the 70's and 80's era knives.
It seems the change has been a gradual process over time, through each generation.

The big problem with the "Dot Era" knives is that the bigger percentage of them, have a really dark, almost black scale on the pile side.

It really limited the knives that I bought, because I always tried to find specimens that had good color on both sides.
