I'm looking into buying my first case, and I'm wondering how sharp they come out of the box. Do they come shaving sharp? Close to it?

All knives I've purchased new from Case have been shaving sharp right out of the box. You may want to reprofile the edges though, my Mini-Trapper was pretty uneven...Great knives for the money.

In my experience they are pretty sharp but a few have been just a little "toothy". You can smooth out the edge easy enough, no problem.
Which Case model are you thinking about buying, Brutus013?

Just call me Brutus, using numbers in names is a bit weird.

I've been looking at a wide range of models. Medium stockman's a bit too small for what I'm looking for, large stockman's a bit too expensive. Texas Toothpick is a bit too small, as well. There's the medium jack, just a BIT too small.

Out of all the ones I've looked at, the two that really caught my eye are the Trapper in orange G10 and any of the various Russlocks. I think I'll probably get the orange G10 trapper, as the Russlock's are a bit expensive (I've been looking t the dark red checkerboard bone type handle). Then the Russlock will probably be my next Case.

check out the yellow handle models they seem a bit cheaper and in some models you can pick between stainless and CV

Agree with the poster about Case being toothy out of the box....but it still chopped hair off my arm. It only took a minute on some 1500 grit paper followed by 50 strokes on each side on a strop and now it's pretty scary sharp.

I have a Case Trapper and it's a great knife. The length is just right for just about anything you'll need to do and with their Trapper line, you get alot of variety.

Indeed they are, but I don't like the yellow. I want some of the more unique models before I get the classics.

its one of those love it or hate it handles
us yeller fans wont hold it against ya though!
both my yellow cv's came shaving sharp as did my mini SS stockman. Had a weird spot on the grind of my Med CV stockman that i worked out and its perfect. Love the trapper pattern i would love to pick one up myself in the future its on my radar
good luck with whatever ya decide

I do like the yellow delrin handles, but the orange G10 caught my eye more. Now that you bring it up, I hadn't thought of getting the yellow trapper...that would be the same great knife for a bit less...

I have a large stockman in CV 6.5 bone stage and a sodbuster jr. CV yellow. Both came very sharp. I do like to "tweek" my own edges though. Now "scary sharp". Love CV! I'm thinking my next Case will be a Moose in CV, Dark red bone. Spay blade for food prep. and clip blade for every day work chores. I looked hard at the Trapper. I think I like the idea of the Moose a bit better(for me). On my large stockman I use the sheeps foot for all purpose, clip for food prep. and 'lil spey as a "just in case razor". Good luck, Matt

I have recently gotten both the large stockman and the trapper in CV amber bone, both came very sharp but needed, as sir woodley said, a little bit of polishing to be just right.

Nice little knives.....
