Case Shield

So the other night I was drying clothes and heard something clanging around in the dryer. Turns out it was my case yellow peanut that I had left in my pocket and washed. It doesn't have any damage surprisingly, but the shield fell out and I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find another shield to replace it? I really don't want to send it in to Case if I can find one somewhere else and put it in myself.

Did you call them and explain what happened? They might mail you a replacement.

Ok I emailed them and they had me send them a picture of ths knife and my address and they're going to send me another shield. They never mentioned anything about a payment so I'm assuming it's free as well, which is awesome.

And that is why I hate glued shields. It's pretty near a deal breaker for me.

Agreed as much as I like the look of a shield on a knife I would about rather it not have one than to have one glued.
I had one fall off a Buck 303 I had and it drove me crazy. They were kind enough to send me one free of charge and I put it back in with a little epoxy but it still bugged me.

Happened to me with a Boker stockman. Never again. I have plenty of knives I certainly don't need any more. Don't want to bother with those having niggling details.

I had a shield fall out of a Canal Street Cutlery Canittler. Fortunately, I found the shield right after it happened and put it back on with some JB Weld. To be fair, the shield fell off because I dropped the knife on my hardwood floor.

I'm a big fan of Case but I sure wish they never would have stopped pinning their shields. They do it for nearly 100 years and then suddenly start gluing them instead. Cost cutting I guess but it's still a bummer.

The glued shields really doesn't bother me at all, especially looking at the quality of the rest of the knife. The customer service from Case is awesome, and with a little JB Weld I can have it better than new. I mean technically a pinned shield would be better but that to me is too small of a problem and too easy of a fix to miss out on such great products and service.

This is pretty much my opinion, as well.

A lost shield never affected the function of a knife I've owned :) I've not had one fall out yet. Case's premium Bose collaborations and SFO have pinned shields.

Are there any knives <$50 (peanut runs ~$35), made in the USA that have pinned shields, carbon steel blades and Case quality?

A shield is an aesthetic touch, so by definition it is nonessential. If you are going to add them do it right. Otherwise why bother? I'd rather have unadorned covers than a knife with a void where the shield used to be.

As to the question of price. I don't know. I know what I want and like and am willing to pay for it. If that means GEC prices so be it.

Lost the shield on my Queen medium stockman a week after I got it, reglued it when I found it with epoxy and clamped it overnight, that was 10 years ago. It's still in there and hasn't moved or loosened since.

Lost the Christmas shield on my Holiday Coke Peanut after a couple of carries, never found it but I just 10 minutes and made a quick one out of an ivory piano key laminate and glued and clamped it overnight, never fell out again.

The shield fell out on my chestnut bone Peanut. I found the shield and seized the opportunity to get rid of the almost impossible to read Case script - I like it much better now,

I like that idea too.

I think Case's unpinned shields are done right. Never had one fall out for me. If you think of the thousands of knives they make and how few complaints there are of lost shields...is it really a problem? Even if it does fall out, they will fix it for free.

I wondered what happened to the shield on your knife when you posted a picture once before. I don't recall if I ever asked the question or not. It left me scratching my head trying to figure out how the shield got that worn, whilst the rest of the knife didn't. Now I know.;)

I like that! I might consider doing that on purpose🤙
