Case Shields?

I recently purchased a Case knife and when I removed it from the box, the shield fell off. There is at this time a generous forum member who is giving away a Case mini trapper on this forum that he too has lost the shield from.

I'm a long time collector of fixed blades, having recently moved into the area of traditional slip joints. I've fallen in love with Great Eastern but I also like some of the Case knives (and so does my budget). My question to those of you who have experience with Case knives; how big of a problem is it with Case knives losing their unpinned shields? Does it happen often? Obviously once is too much but I'd rather not invest in a collection of knives that are known for losing their shields. Thanks much.

I have several CASE Knives. But not at collection at all. Each of my CASE Knives are users. I´ve used them often, frequently and they worked fine. I´ve never had a problem with a shield falling off from them. I´ve heard about that problem here in this Great Crowd.

All I can tell you in falling shields - I´ve had that problem with a Puma Stockman. But a little sandpaper and some superglue fixed that problem easily. (Just FYI)

yes they fall off most of the later case knives, you have to re glue them with some proper epoxy,i use the slowest setting aircraft grade stuff, I cannot think of the scotch weld no,its a problem.

In reading posts on this forum and others, one might conclude shields falling off of Case knives is common, because these forums will effectively concentrate the feedback from the users/collectors of them. But that's the illusion of it; ordinarily, most people won't mention any issues at all, if nothing bad happens with their new knife (this is true with reviews of any product, be it knives or kitchen appliances or automobiles). The 'good' examples number in the thousands (or tens-of- or hundreds-of-thousands), but very rarely get any mention at all.

Point being, it's not very common. It does happen, but not in the numbers that might be assumed. I have dozens of Case knives (post-pinned-shield era), and a couple or three hundred knives total; only one of them ever had it's shield fall out, in exactly the same manner and circumstance as yours (brand new out-of-box, and the shield dropped into my lap as I was inspecting it for the first time). The good news was, it's an easy fix with some gel superglue and 5 minutes' time. Better-than-new when I was done with it.

In a circumstance where a shield might fall out of a new Case knife and get lost before the purchaser is aware, Case will still make it right, either in repairing it or in replacing the knife with another new one. So there's really very little to worry about. Don't sweat it. :)

I have about 80 Case knives. Majority of those were produced in the past 4 years, most bought new. I have never had a shield fall out of a new or old Case knife, either in the box or during use and carry. I am sure it can happen, but it has not happened to me.

As David stated, it is something that is covered under the warranty so I see no reason to not collect Case knives because of the rare incident of a shield falling off. I have never experienced that issue myself but have seen knives on the secondary market with missing shields.

Give Case a call, and they will either send you a new shield with instructions on installing, or will ask you to send the knife in, where they will not only install a new shield, but give the knife a spa treatment if needed. And yes, shields falling off are extremely rare.

I'm glad I asked the question. Good to know that this is apparently an infrequent problem and nothing to worry about. Thanks for the info.

I guess Ive just had bad luck so Ive had 3 fall off, none of them users really, odd use maybe, none of them have had to be re sharpened so that much use, perhaps its the climate in Ireland? its an easy fix and has no effect on my buying case knives, I believe the Bose series of case knifes have pinned shields if its a worry for you.

The only Case I own is a Peanut and so far no shield problems. Knock on wood.
I wonder if they could brand a knife with the script writing Case. I think that would look pretty cool and wouldn't have to worry about the shield falling out, ever.

I had a shield fall off a brand new Swayback Gent as I took it out of the box. Strange but true.

I had a peanut accidentally go through the wash, and the shield fell off, but that was an especially rough situation. Found that little bugger too, in the dryer, and glued it back on!

From my experience, I bought three Case knives.
One is on my GAW here

So please go!

Two of three had the shield falling, and about this I luckily found it. The third is a sodbusters...

As you can see I also glued wrongly, but I don't care.
This is my experience with Case. Lovely knives indeed, but I was unlucky I think...

That is the same model I had the shield fall off as I took it out of the box.

That's interesting, if the 'red shield' fell out on yours. That's the ONE example of the problem I've seen (mentioned in my earlier post), as it happened to my 'Red Shield' 5344 SS stag stockman, pictured alongside my 1970 stag Peanut, here:
