Anyone purchase a Case Small Stockman recently? If so, how is the fit and finish? Specifically, is there any blade play? This would be a gift for a friend who happens to be ~very~ particular.

I'm especially interested in either the Pocket Worn Red Bone or the Amber Bone, since those two have the rounded bolsters.

Any comments are appreciated,
-Bob

Jigged Brown Synthetic 2 5/8", is nothing special.
I hope the better handled knives are better finished.

Bob I am not that particular. LOL
If you call your order in most of the net deallers will check the knife if you ask them too. Some even have a comment area on the order forum that you can do the same.

You're not my father-in-law then. :D

I'll definitely do that. New Graham and Cumbreland are famous for offering that level of service and I'll buy from them if I can.

I love Case knives - BUT - I recently looked at one of their small Stockman knives, and it looked ok, but not up to the old Case standards that I remember. It looked 'over-polished', with edges rounded off a little too much, and a couple of small areas where the jigged-bone scales had more material removed than the surrounding liners/bolsters. (This seems to be the issue with most of the production Case knives I've seen in recent years; the commemorative/special issues seem to have a little better fit & finish.)

Then, I looked at a Case Mini-Trapper, that had the same issues, but not as bad. I bought that one.

My biggest complaint with Case is the inconsistency these days. They're still great knives, with good steel and a great feel in the hand (I've always loved the way Case knives feel), and generally good 'walk-and-talk' from what I've seen. Nowadays, if you want to find that 'old Case quality', you have to look at a few of them before you buy. I don't buy them online for that reason.

thx - cpr

Sorry to say, I have that feeling, too. I looked at a display of knives at the local Sportsman's Warehouse, and didn't even bother to fondle any of them. Definitely not the Case I remember.
