Not much of a traditional aficionado, getting ready to pick up one or the other to actually use at the farm, which one?

GEC Bull Nose. You won't regret the extra price. They're much sturdier and solid in my opinion.

The case sod buster is a great user knife, especially in cv ( you could also try an opinel ) the gec costs more, but just looks a little more refined than the sodbuster. For a user knife the opinel no.8 is dirt cheap ( 14.95 on knife center ) and it locks, so that's what I'd recommend.

I agree with Hickory n steel. I'd recommend the Opinel no. 7 or no. 8 in Carbon steel. My favourite user.

I have both and use them often. The cost on a Sodbuster Jr. and the high availability makes it an easy first choice. For a working knife, the Delrin models (yellow, black, navy blue) do fine. Your choice of CV or stainless. When you find a Bullnose you like, the Case will be there as a backup.

Yeah you can get the sodbuster at your local ACE hardware that's where I got mine, it may cost a few $ more but it's good to support local business:thumbup:

I've owned both, but kept the junior. The bullnose is a good well made knife at a bit higher price, but the junior has a little mojo. The thin blade just slices so well.

I prefer the Jr. In Yeller.

The Jr. is hard to beat for the price and easily replaceable should you lose or break it. The GEC is likely a nicer knife but I can't see what it will do that the Jr. can't.

For a beater the Jr is a great knife. For the best value stick with the composite slabs as Case has really moved the price north on the bone models. Still a good value, but not near what the yellow CV is at $23.

If it's a genuine user, go with the Case all the way. The Case in CV is meant 100% to be used. The GEC will do all the same stuff and is also meant to be a user but to look a bit more refined while doing it.

I'd be a lot more comfortable cutting a steel-braided house with my Case Sodbuster than with any of my GECs...

Thanks for all the replies. I also checked out a few comparison on here a another forum. I'm going to get 1 of each.

Right decision! After all, it's knives which are a lot cheaper than drugs, booze, or guns. When in doubt, buy both. You can always gift one off after you decide on the one you like better.

I recently tried the sodbuster Jr., and I was really surprised at how small it is but how well it fits in hand. Definitely a tough little knife. Can't comment on the bull nose but my sodbuster (large not jr.) is a sturdy knife I don't feel uncomfortable being hard on. However I am not afraid to beat on my GEC's if I have to, they are solid and well made.

Another to consider is a Queen country cousin. Similar to the two knives you're considering. Price is about $30-40. D2 steel blades, Delrin handles and brass liners.
About 3.6" closed, 7.75" total length.

This would be my suggestion as well. If you're going to be using that thing hard on a farm the D2 is going to hold up better than the Case or GEC.

I carried a Case Sodbuster Jr. for about 6 yrs.., held up to all I threw at it.., then I came across the F&F Bull Nose in 01 Tool steel, now that's my workhorse..

I was gonna suggest that ( including the opinel ) but wasn't sure if you had a budget or not.
FYI my sodbuster Jr had a little bit of blade play so I put a scrap of leather on either side and gave it one good squeeze in my vice and that tightened it up no problem and you can't even tell I did anything to it .
