Case Sodbuster CV...

Been wanting one of these for a while. I tried the Jr in SS, but didn't like it at all. It was dull, and even after careful sharpening, didn't cut nearly as well as my Soldier. It also didn't feel comfortable in my hand...not sure why. Maybe I should get the "regular" size Sodbuster?
It was a darn tough knife, however.

But...The CV catches my eye, and is available here:

It looks like a good price. Is this a reputable dealer?

Many thanks,
Bob

I have a Case amber boned medium stockman with CV blades
that are just great! I also have a Case small serpentine jack
with Tru-Sharp (they should call it unsharp) that I cannot get an edge on.
It's a small little blade with an obtuse edge.
It came ok sharp but that didn't last for long.

The CV stockman on the otherhand was hair poppin sharp. and from
my experience with 1095 it will be able to get and keep an edge better.

CV is the way to go! Case needs to make more of these. It's like
a total different knife experience. :-)

Not sure about the dealer.. looks ok. and that's the right price.

I have two Case Sodbuster Jrs, a CV and an SS, which I bought at about the same time. Since these are working knives, I don't want to have to bother too much with edge maintenance, so I just put a modest 40° (inclusive) edge on each one. Although they apparently have identical edges, the CV feels sharper, cuts better, and holds an edge longer than the SS.

Here is one that is the Regular(larger) Sodbuster in CV that is also a collector's model circle C and numbered which is a far and away a better quality controlled knife than any others IMO:

I can't get my stainless Sodbuster Jr. as sharp as my CV, but I have an older Case Barlow and a Case Stockman in stainless which I can get extremely sharp (and they also hold the edge very well). I'm wondering if the "Tru-Sharp" steel they are using now is different from that used in their earlier stainless knives.

What year was your knife made? A buddy gave me a stainless one made in 2001 that would not get sharp. The stainless version that I have from 2005 is much easier to get an edge on. The 2005 SS seems to have been ground a bit finer to begin with than the 2001 SS (the 2001 version also had other QC problems, handle is misshaped-it looks like it leans to one side when you set it on its back. I have often thought that someone was being trained on this one...). The 2005 SS compares well with my CV version (2003) in terms of ease of sharpening and edge holding, but the 2001 never would take an edge.

My SS Sodbuster was made this year (2007). The Barlow is 1981, and the Stockman is 1982.

I've had the same experience as Bartleby. My 2005 and 2006 Case SS trapper and mini-trapper came ripping sharp and have stayed that way with just a strop or two on bare leather.

I've also noticed that between my early 2000s CV knives and later ones that the later walk and talk better and have a little better F&F.

If what Bartleby and Amos are saying seems to be the rule on the newer Cases, (and in my experience it seems to be true too, the very new Cases seem to be very good lately), is this a sign that maybe Case quality control is starting to raise the bar back to where it once was? May signal good things on the horizon for Case! :D

Haven't tried anything made in 2007, hopefully the one Richard has is a fluke. They have seemed more consistant in QC from '05 onward.

It's not really a bad knife, and the fit and finish is excellent. It's just that my 2006 CV Sodbuster Jr and some early 1980s SS knives seem to take a slightly better edge. I'm not a sharpness freak, so it's really not so important to me. Just thought I would mention it.

I took a flyer on bidding on a 1986 CV Sodbuster (2138) on Ebay. The pictured knife looked like it had seen some good use. However, I just got it today and, I swear, I don't think this knife has ever seen the light of day! Apparently the seller needs a new camera. LOL! The knife is in GREAT shape.

This is my first Sodbuster and I'm rather impressed. That flat-ground blade already has a pretty good edge on it and, when I get done on the Sharpmaker, I reckon it'll be a ridiculously good slicer.

It's strange, my Case Mini Trapper in ss takes and holds a good edge. My Sodbuster in ss, well, I'm still working on it.
