I've been reading/looking at Opinel knives and I think I want to get a carbon steel one to carry around. I've been using/carrying a Case Sodbuster Jr for ages and was curious as to which Opinel # is closest in overall size to it. Also does anyone know how blade length of Opinels are measured, is it the entire length of the blade for just the cutting edge? And especially if anyone could post pics of Opinel along with Sodbuster Jr it'd be appreciated.

Due to the construction of the Opinel, the cutting edge actually runs right to the handle, with no choil on the blade at all. If you want the closest blade length to the Case soddie junior, then the number 7 is very close.

First up is on Opinel 09 and Sodbuster Jr. The reason I did the photos of it is I forgot my roommate owned a 07. :o

Here is what Jackknife was talking about. It's an Opinel 07 and Sodbuster Jr.

Hope these help. :)

Thanks so much for the input and photos from many of the descriptions I had heard of the #7 I was thinking it was too big for what I wanted and that I'd need a smaller Opinel, but I see the #7 is the one I want hopefully they won't multiply after the first one.

Don't worry fan, they're cheap. Get a 6, 7 and 8, then you'll be sure to have the one you want. You still won't spend $50!

Oh, they will multiply, count on that.

The problem with Opinel's is that they are habit forming. For one thing, they can become a hobby onto themselves if you get to modifying and refinishing like I have done on some. Very easy to customize, with a little sandpaper, some minwax stain and some spar urathane. Reshaping the handles can be done as well.

I've lost count of how many Opinel's I've worked on, and then gifted away.

I don't have a 7 but I have a 6 and a Sodbuster Jr. I think a 6 comes pretty close too. Get a 6 and a 7. The second knife will help justify shipping costs.

This is an Opinel No. 6 with a Sodbuster Jr. The No.6 is the smallest locking Opinel.

As Steve indicated, the Opinel #6 would be the closest in size to the Sodbuster Jr. My locking carbon #6 has been one of my favourite EDC knives for years.

I'm curious, the non-locking Opinels, are they just friction folders or are they a slip-joint, how do they keep open, I've always heard Opinels were bad for closing if you didn't use the lock.

Friction is the only thing keeping Opinels open when the locking ring is not there.
So yeah the tent to try and close on you with out the lock
