I wonder if anyone knows what type of stainless Case used in the 1980's? I know they use 420HC now, but did they in fact use something different 20 years ago (440?)? I'm referring to an 8 dot 1982 Case 6235 1/2 jack that sharpens and works pretty good. Lots of snap in the blades also, more than in modern Case knives.
If anyone can help here please jump in!!
Thanks in advance!

Good post, I am looking forward to the replies. I was wondering the same question just the other day. My EDC for the last few months has been a 1981 Case Mini Trapper with stainless blades and I was thinking that this steel seems to be easier to sharpen and hold an edge longer than the current 420HC knives by Case. This one was a user that had been sharpened a bit but the blade snap is much better than any of my newer Case knives. I actually prefer that the blades are not highly polished like the new ones. I am not sure when Case made the switch, but the springs on mine are made of carbon steel and not stainless like a 1988 Mini Trapper I own.

I am also curious as to what the answer is. I have been carring a '78 pen knife with stainless blades and it seems to hold an edge pretty well. Curious as to what steel type tho.
